California lab says it discovered coronavirus vaccine in 3 hours

quote:

An American biotech company says it created a coronavirus vaccine three hours after getting access to the virus' genetic sequence in mid-January, and now scientists are racing to get the vaccine on the market in record time.

Inovio Pharmaceuticals is based in Pennsylvania, but scientists in its laboratory in San Diego made the discovery.

"We were able to rapidly construct our vaccine in a matter of about three hours once we had the DNA sequence from the virus available because of the power of our DNA medicine platform," Dr. J. Joseph Kim, Inovio's president and CEO, told FOX Business. "Our goal is to start phase one human testing in the U.S. early this summer."

Pretty sure that is a pump and dump. I'm guessing some Chinese investors with a insider that has a position in the stock or has some options on it. Another theory is someone is short Tesla shares and desperate. 3 hour gene sequencing for a vaccine seems a little too easy.

I enjoy debating you and the whopper jr artist. I get that some posters don’t like wading through pages of pissing contests though. Last night you clearly overplayed your hand. Nobody is an expert in everything. It’s better to just fold early on when you know you’re beat rather than throw good money after bad.

For the record I’ve said the data outside of China is reassuring for us here. If this was an apocalyptic event we’d likely already seen bodies piling up outside of China. However the numbers being reported from Wuhan are still very concerning. Most reasonable people don’t trust China and believe the numbers are being underreported.

It’s also clear to me that Wuhan’s medical infrastructure is overwhelmed. To me that’s the main threat this thing still poses to us and everyone else. No city is equipped to handle an extra 10k serious/critcal pts. No seasonal flu puts that type of strain on the system. I still think it’s unlikely to happen here but I wouldn’t make fun of anyone for stealing a couple dozen impossible whopper patties and throwing them in the freezer.

hhmmm

Wait 5 months before starting trials when most people think the summer is going to kill it anyway. Then how many years will it take for FDA approval?

Something is definitely fishy with them. They are basically a penny stock. That said, someone has made some money this week. The stock price is up 34% since this topic first came up 2 days ago. I almost took a speculative flyer on them; definitely not buying in now. Now it's hitting the national news circuit. Curious to see what happens after this little boost subsides.

4PM-ish central time, but they've been delayed the past few days.

So, for a virus that is wildly contagious in Wuhan, the only human to human transmissions in the states have been between spouses. There have been plenty of flights as well as symptomatic, unquarantined patients, yet no more transmissions.

Your best post in like 10 pages slackster... it’s a good point and one of the most encouraging parts. I think we still have another month until we understand what we are dealing with in the West.

They don’t have anything that is really usable now.

They designed it in 3 hours.

They use a novel approach of generated a customized DNA plasmid containing genes for viral antigens. They inject the novel DNA into you, and give you an electric current at the injection site to cause your cells to take up the foreign DNA

These cells then start to appear as infected to your immune system, which responds.

Obviously a very novel approach that will require mountains of paperwork before its deployed.

The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Thursday that the coronavirus will likely stay for “beyond this season, or beyond this year,” as the disease has the potential to propagate in the United States.

"Right now we're in an aggressive containment mode," CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield told CNN. "This virus is probably with us beyond this season, beyond this year, and I think eventually the virus will find a foothold and we will get community-based transmission."

He said it could become a disease like the seasonal flu, the “only difference is we don’t understand this virus.”

I guess. But a taxi driver in Japan just killed his mother in law because he drove some Chinese. Some of the spread in Japan is concerning

Japan's numbers have ballooned because of that cruise ship. That thing has been a disaster, but it makes a lot of sense given cruise ships are prone to an outbreak.

So far, only the World Health Organization (WHO) has been helping China assess the outbreak. When asked if the CDC is not working in China for political reasons, Redfield said, "All I can say is it is above the director of CDC because I know he would love to have that as a system.”

"There's a lot of information we don't know — that's why I offered to provide assistance, direct assistance, and send our CDC folks over there back on Jan. 6 to really help them gather that information and also to help us see the information first hand that we need to help make the right public health recommendations for our nation," Redfield said.

"That letter has not been responded to yet by the official Chinese government."

Can I just walk around without a mask and get coronavirus instead?

It's called electroporation. It's very real. The efficacy of their DNA strands would be where the snake oil is.

There is some basis to it.

I’ve done it to bacterial cells: use high voltage to generate pores in the cell wall to allow DNA to slip in.

It’s probably the best way to transfect mammalian cells in vivo. It’s the primary method of making knock out mice.
Not sure how it’ll feel on the skin though.

So it has sone merit, and the notion is not bleeding edge. An extreme form of it are used in cancer treatments where they need extreme precision.

But this particular application is entirely unproven. How many doses does it take for 100% assurance of immune response? Do you need to get the shot in different locations/times? How long is immunity? Can it generate an autoimmune response from the thousands of over expressed genes this method has a tendency of causing? Can you accidentally destroy nerve cells by transforming them with these viral genes and having the immune system target them?
