Who is “they” and are they sure or is it a guess based on information coming out of China?
Think about this - how do you think they estimate 75k infections on 1/25 for their study?
It's not boots on the ground, so what is it?

Right. I understand. Basically you are saying everything at this point is a guess except:
1. There is a novel virus
2. It is spreading quickly from a known location
3. People are dying
If you need more information than that to slow the travel of people from that known source you are without a doubt a moron. And I don’t think we haven’t done it yet because we don’t want to, I think we haven’t done it because the wheels of bureaucracy move slow and this is why everyone has always suspected a superbug (not saying this is a superbug) would be very deadly in today’s world

You think we're going to start blocking off roads next flu season?

I can understand not wanting to jump the gun when our economy and China’s are so interdependent. It’s not like it’s some poor African country.

Very surprised it took this long... I would have guessed SF to be the first place, being it’s a huge Asian population and the number of flights from Asia that route through there.

Imagine how stupid this thread would seem to someone who had no knowledge of the flu or this virus.
The flu kills 300k across the world each year. The ONLY reason reason it doesn't get this kind of reaction is because it's just an accepted part of life at this point. Comes around every fall and we just deal with it.
This coronavirus is new and unknown, and humans naturally have an aversion to the unknown. We have a propensity to overreact out of fear. This virus and thread are a perfect example of that.
ETA - I'm genuinely not trying to belittle this virus. I just think the response is disproportionate to the risk when you consider the respond to similar risks.

I'm surprised there haven't been more instances in Vancouver. Huge Asian population there. 28 percent Chinese heritage

One of the doctors at the White House briefing did a good job explaining why they are having the response they have compared to the flu.
Video
I'm hoping that his turns out to be a bit overblown but I understand being cautious.

There are currently 11,301 confirmed cases worldwide, including 258 fatalities.

Based on the kill rate posted this is going to kill way more people than the flu worldwide

Thank you for that link. That's exactly what I just said - the unknown is terrifying to humans. The risk we know about - the flu - is very real, yet people ignore it because it's known. Look how many people refuse to get a flu shot, a shot that may be inconsequential to them, but can help prevent the spread among their fellow men.
I'd be shocked if more than 1/3 of people who've wanted us to close our borders for two weeks have received a flu shot. That's the kind of disproportionate response I'm discussing.

How are you drawing that conclusion?

Who is ignoring the Flu? I see this meme on social media comparing it to the Flu and how people should be worried about the Flu. Everyone I know takes all possible precautions against the Flu. What else are we all ignoring?

I have a can of lysol spray that says it kills this corona virus. The bottle is about 3 years old. This isn’t a new disease. Is it just so rare that the sudden spread is what’s worrisome?
side note: Already sprayed it all over me like my daily Axe Body spray regimen so I should be good to go

Considering 4/10 kids and 6/10 adults don't get a flu shot, your group is quite unique.

Yeah, I know so many people who don't get it.
