Considering 4/10 kids and 6/10 adults don't get a flu shot, your group is quite unique.
I guess I try not to hang out with complete morons. In our office we had 100% take the flu shot this year.
Maybe when you keep lecturing us all about caring about the Flu you should direct it at morons and anti-vax facebook mom groups.

I have a can of lysol spray that says it kills this corona virus. The bottle is about 3 years old.
It probably does kill many types of corona virus; that likely includes this one if you follow the instructions.

This isn’t a new disease.
Technically, THIS version of the coronavirus is new (aka NOVEL).

Is it just so rare that the sudden spread is what’s worrisome?
No. This form of the virus tends to affect the lungs more (instead of the upper respiratory tract) and cause pneumonia; that can lead to death. It's also quite contagious.

Nassim Taleb Article
Nassim Taleb is a good follow on the topic of risk. He discusses why Chinese Bat Virus risk =/= Flu risk. His article which is linked was used by the US Government on this issue.

I forgot to add the key word could kill more people than the flu based on current reported death rates

@lookner
So a Chinese employee of German company visited the company in Germany & didn't show symptoms in Germany, but now 6 employees of the company who had contact with her have the virus, one of their kids has the virus, and someone in Spain who had contact with them has the virus

Is it just me or is thing taking a long time to get going? I dont think this thing is going to be much of a worldwide issue.

That’s the debate... the lack of quick spread in the developed world tends to lead to it being less contagious as originally thought.
The most interesting is going to be the Germany case. With the lack of spread everywhere leads to it not being as contagious when asymptomatic... so the question is, was she sick and covering it up after the fact?

Man time stamps on updates would be pretty cool

I said I'd be surprised if more than a third get the vaccine every year. Congrats on being in that third.

Nassim Taleb believes any new risk should be treated as a world ended until proven otherwise. He has the same opinion as the about climate change. He believes the burden of proof is on the people who want to continue with the status quo. Just want to make sure we're on the same page about Taleb.

Pretty sure spread and cases are more than SARS. Remember, we still dont have much info out of china. They've known about this since December. Locked people up for reporting. How bad was it then? Now, how bad is it getting? Block off roads, countries shutting borders, Flights stopping to China.
Doesnt seem like just a flu. Btw China can let ppl out and about, its already spread and wont matter. They've even said containment is too late the other day.

But the P2P is extremely limited
Japan - Tour bus driver and passenger stuck in a confined space for 8hrs with someone who had it
Chicago - Husband of woman with it, obviously had physical contact
Vietnam - Son of Man from Wuhan, likely shared food or the likes
Germany - This is the curious one that needs more info
But to have supposedly 100k cases in Wuhan and then people traveling for the CNY all over the world, to only have a handful of P2P is extremely small. Hell, HK only has 8 cases right now and you know Tens of thousands from the area were there for CNY.

It's interesting how this works. If China does nothing and it's bad, they get ridiculed. If China takes drastic measures before they know precisely how bad it will be, people just assume it's bad anyway.
That's the problem I have with Taleb's approach linked earlier in this thread. He suggests that any new virus should shut down global travel until its determined it will not cause a mass extinction. The logic is that however small the risk of extinction on a single virus may be, extinction is such a dire consequence that it should drive the policy.
In the real world that's simply not practical. A few false alarms and it would never be used again.

She's the definition of a superspreader.
Also, that company clearly has terrible hygiene.

Yup and that’s why we need more info... something doesn’t add up
