Yikes, this is a biggum if true
We will see how the US tries to control the outbreak/how a first word healthcare system deals with the virus.
No reason to panic yet.

The case is located in Chicago. The patient is the wife of a man who traveled to China & contracted coronavirus.
It is NOT spreading widely, says IL public health Dept.

Well we know it wasn't transmitted via sex amirite

Not a big deal then... obviously she is going to contract it kissing and sleeping with someone who has it.
Wake me up when someone who isn’t in a relationship contracts it.

I cant find anywhere where CDC or Illinois Health officials said if the spouse had been kept under quarantine since husband diagnosed.
Feel like that would be an important piece of information...

According to this she was in isolation.

The article said she didn't so symptoms on the flight.

Officials said the new patient, a woman in her 60s, is doing well and is in stable condition. She remains isolated in a hospital as a precaution, U.S. health officials said on a conference call with reporters. The Illinois patient traveled to China in late December and began experiencing symptoms when she returned to the U.S. last week, officials said. She did not have symptoms while flying, they said.
“She was not symptomatic when flying. And based on what we know now about this virus, our concern for transmission before symptoms develop is low, so that is reassuring,” Dr. Allison Arwady, Chicago’s public health commissioner, said on the call.

When was he diagnosed, how long had be been back from China when he started symptoms?

Thanks.
This should be a good case to monitor then. If she passed on to someone else that would indicate transmission while asymptomatic.
ETA: not saying it would mean everyone can pass it while asymptomatic.

Wait... so is it P2P contraction? The article says she went to Wuhan too. I’m confused

I can't find confirmation of that CBS report of them being married. However, this from NBC said they lived together.
This is still not great, but it's less concerning than if it was some random person who got it from touching the same stairway railing or something.

The new patient lives with a Chicago woman in her 60s who was diagnosed after returning last month from Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the outbreak that's now sickened upward of 8,000 people

During the CDC teleconference they still don't know if you can transmit it while asymptomatic but that goes against a lot of Chinese sources who say you can. I'm like you, I'm going to watch this and I'm a little concerned for the rest of the people on that flight.

Again, this makes zero sense... the article says she went to China and returned last week, showing symptoms just recently.
Sounds like she brought it back, same as her husband and just showed symptoms later.

I think the woman was the first case and her husband is the human to human transmission.
ETA - yes, the woman got it from Wuhan. She gave it to her spouse who wasn't in Wuhan with her.

India is reporting their first confirmed case of Corona Virus. Hope it doesn't spread there like wild fire.

Yea, India and most of Africa seem like they could be major issues. However, we still aren't seeing any indication of rapid spread of the virus outside of China.

Anyone else have doubts about how Chicago handles things? any things? I would hope that federal rules could over rule any City decision making.
About the asymptomatic transmission; Germany (two days ago) reported that the case there was followed by three additional cases, at the same company where an asymptomatic Chinese colleague from Wuhan had given a training course, and then she started feeling ill on her way back to China. None of the four cases there had been to China.
That may have changed, but they were pretty sure that it was asymptomatic transmission followed by four positive tests for Corona.

Just curious... Are any of the infections occurring outside of someone of asian descent?
I read a paper about a certain receptor cell needed for coronavirus infection and the study stated the one Asian guy in the study had a 47% higher level of the receptor cell that any other study participants.
Just a thought.
