Exactly how convincing would the data have to be for the Surgeon General to make a PSA telling everyone to light ‘em up? Because we need to get to that point.

This is about more than that. I'm not saying I would pick up smoking, but I'd be entertained as heck watching the chaos and seeing officials struggle to narrate positions that go against what they're expected to say.
This is also about trading those dumb arse "The Truth" anti-smoking commercials with Mad-Men style pro tobacco commercials. A sudden resurgence of the Marlboro Man would be more entertaining than some half-arsed attempt to keep kids from vaping.
The only thing better would be if the cure ended up being a 50/50 mix street meth and heroin.

I think they're pretty damn effective and before vaping hit the country, I think the data proved that.
It would be a good thing for everyone's wallet (except tobacco workers) if everyone in this country stopped smoking. Much higher rates of smoking in low socio-economic demographics i.e. "uninsured". Who do you think picks up their medical bills?

It's possible that something besides nicotine is having an impact. But if nicotine does prevent infection or slow the progression of the disease, what we still won't know is if a patch works, because it's obviously not delivering the nicotine to the body in the same way as smoking and vaping do. I would love for the French nicotine patch study to produce a positive result.

And the counting/reporting of non-CoviD, excess deaths due to not seeking treatment begins. Reuters report covering CDC data out of New York showing 22% of the excess deaths that have happened in New York since March are non-CoviD deaths.

State Government would go broke if they lost that sin tax. That tax is not to encourage people to stop smoking anymore than the billions of dollar settlement the tobacco companies paid was to be used to pay health costs.

Looking for a little help to provide some rebuttals. Some of the negative Nancy's are still talking about the fear of second round of deadly corona because we are opening up to soon.
What is a good reference to share with them that this is highly unlikely? I've tried already stating the obvious that staying shutdown won't make the virus disappear.

The virus is still around. If people interact more, spread and cases should inevitably increase.There will be some benefit from lower Rt, increased testing, increased awareness, etc. And mayyyybe weather. But why would cases not increase as interaction increases? Fear of a second wave, of some degree, isn’t being negative, it’s being realistic.

I get that. It’s more just my frustration with those that are saying things need to stay shutdown because if we open now cases are going to skyrocket and could be worse than the first round

It's not being realistic...it's being emotional. If you're over 75, have respiratory or immune issues, etc. I can understand the fear. For that group it is justified. Somewhat.
For the overwhelming majority of this country? The fear is completely unfounded and in no way a rational response based on the facts.
