Is this the same WHO that said there was no evidence of human to human contagion? I'll take my guidance on this issue from someone else if that is ok.
"No evidence" does not mean can't or won't happen. It simply means there was no evidence at the time the statement was made, which was Jan 14. There are plenty of things to criticize WHO for, but this one is off the mark.

Similarly, the statement that there is no evidence of immunity means exactly that... no evidence one way or the other. Would you prefer if they didn't make a statement of no evidence? I find it extremely helpful to know that there is no evidence to support a widely help assumption.

Almost 55k dead at the moment and the tail will be quite long, which will push deaths near 150k, which doesn’t include the second spike in the next 6 weeks or the second wave this winter.

So barring a miraculous cure/therapeutics there are still a lot more people who will die.

It astounds me that you even studied medicine. This is literally some basic level shite.

The 55K dead number is highly inflated with deaths from other diseases. Pro Coronas were so desperate to amp the numbers they've rolled every death including the flu into a corona death. My guess is the real number of corona deaths is somewhere around 20K, if that. And those deaths are mostly elderly and immigrants from China and Europe.

I understand what you are saying, but when The WHO put that out there about human to human contagion they and the Chinese both knew damn well that it was spreading person to person.

Could you imagine being this stupid irl

Cut that number in half and you might have the correct death toll

Trump is in power and in charge so he is the subject. It's not necessarily about being on anyone's team. Trump is a total moron who thinks Californians won't have bad wildfires if they rake forest floors. Trump thinks Americans must show ID to buy a loaf of bread. Trump thinks the British had airfields during the revolutionary war.

He might think all of that but, he can definitely help a country get their economy together. If it wasn't for this trumpvirus, we wouldn't need the Chinese very soon. Or the Saudi's for that matter!!!

Nope. Even if you want to assume that’s the case, if you look at the overall pot something doesn’t add up to your math.

They didn’t inflate COVID-19 deaths by taking away from flu, because the overall rate of deaths from influenza like illnesses surged to around 5x more over the baseline rate compared to the worst flu season in 40+ years.

Also, for those that want to insist it was being commonly spread causing illness here in December/January, note the complete lack of surge of associated deaths in that time frame. It stayed in the normal trend until March.

Has it been mentioned in this thread yet the increase in strokes they are seeing in young patients (under 50) with coronavirus who otherwise are having mild symptoms?

What aggravating complications do they have? Obesity? Hypertension. Has it been studied? It could be entirely unrelated as well and just a coincidence. Not terribly scientific post coming from a medical professional.

Your chart only hits pneumonia. I'm interested to see if there has been a drop in heart disease deaths or diabetes deaths. Heart disease kills 1,773 per day in a normal day and diabetes kills 228 per day in a normal day.

We know that corona spreads like wildfire through hospitals, they were a huge source in Italy. How many of the covid deaths were people already in a hospital for heart disease/diabetes and contracted CV19, I'm betting a lot.

Yes, because it spreads fear. Which is what they wanted. It would be very unusual for there to be no immunity at all. Wuhan would still be a warzone right now.

I only asked if the topic has been brought up recently. I don't follow this thread everyday.

Experts have reported kidney issues, heart problems, and, more recently, blood clots appearing in various parts of patients' bodies. Such clots typically appear in the most severe cases; however, new research from a group of doctors in New York City suggests that even patients with mild COVID-19 cases may experience blood-clot-related complications.

According to Thomas Oxley, a neurosurgeon at Mount Sinai Hospital, some younger COVID-19 patients with mild or no symptoms have experienced large-vessel strokes. Such strokes are typically caused by blood clots that travel from other parts of the body into the brain. Oxley and his colleagues submitted their findings to the New England Journal of Medicine for publication next week.

"Our report shows a sevenfold increase in incidence of sudden stroke in young patients during the past two weeks. Most of these patients have no past medical history and were at home with either mild symptoms (or in two cases, no symptoms) of COVID-19,"

quote:

Oxley told the Australian Broadcasting Co. that strokes have been observed in older COVID-19 patients, but this new trend was concerning because it involved younger patients in their 30s and 40s with mild symptoms.

All five people Oxley described were under 50; one of them died, three are in rehabilitation facilities, and the fifth person will require intensive in-home care, he said.

"For comparison, our service, over the previous 12 months, has treated on average 0.73 patients every 2 weeks under the age of 50 years with large vessel stroke," Oxley and his coauthors wrote in their coming report, according to CNN. That's no more than two people per month.

The reality is the exact opposite, and 55k is a huge undercount. Many people in places like NYC have died at home and were never tested for COVID-19.

If you believe that the real number of deaths is much smaller, how do you account for the overflowing morgues in places like NYC? How do you account that, for the last month, the number of total deaths from all causes in New York is more than double the total deaths from that time a year ago?

I mean, there are over 50,000 people just in the state of New York who are in the hospital right now who are suffering from COVID-19.

I understand the desire to wish this virus away, but reality is reality.

And I'll ignore the implication that the lives of the elderly and immigrants are worth less than others. (Where's your evidence that immigrants are over-represented in COVID-19 deaths?)

Excess mortality data would be hard to manipulate, since it is just looking at the number of deaths compared to historical data. Essentially, every country that has high quality mortality data is showing a big spike in excess mortality that lines up with the pandemic timeline. Not only do the spikes in excess mortality line of up with the pandemic but they indicate that COVID19 deaths are probably being under reported in many areas.

The serosurvey data that is currently being collected has a lot of issues but is still useful. One quick note on these antibody test, a pre-print article published this week looked at 14 different test that are currently being used and basically all of them had major issues. This is partly b/c the requirement for these test to get FDA clearance before use was waived to speed up the process of getting them to market. So in many instances, the people using these test don't actually know what the test data really means. We've seen a couple of papers based on serosurvey data already pulled back and others are getting hammered in pre-print review. It will be interesting to see what the first wave of peer reviewed articles ends up looking like.

Using the various antibody studies that have been produced for the US and we can probably assume that b/w 1 - 3% of the population has been infected with an IFR around 1%.

US nCFR is currently 5.6%

IFR for 1% of population infected would be 1.7%

IFR for 3% of population infected would be 0.6%

This is using reported deaths from today but that number is probably lower than reality.

I agree with this sentiment to an extent. We all have elderly loved ones. Hell, some of us may even be getting close to "old" ourselves. But who is dying from this cannot be ignored, and it needs to inform our assessment of the nature of this crisis and our response to it. We cannot commit national suicide just to extend the lives of nursing home residents or those who were already near death for reasons totally unrelated to Covid.

There was an article in the Alabama press yesterday stating that over 77% of the 200 or so dead in Alabama were over 65. I was actually surprised that they printed it. I'll bet if you dug deeper you would find that the overwhelming majority of that group were well over 70 and/or suffering from other health problems. I am certain that a big portion of the dead are from nursing homes. I am not making light of these deaths, but people need to know these things. And it needs to be taken into account in how the country responds to this.
