It's unfortunate, but fear is almost a necessary evil in getting people to stay at home and not spread the virus.

I'd encourage you, if you haven't already, to look at the data from Kinsa. They make "smart thermometers." When someone takes their temperature, the thermometer uploads the data via wifi. They have over a million thermometers in use in the US and get over 160,000 readings uploaded every day. So, they can see where the number of fevers has increased, which has generally corresponded to outbreaks of COVID-19. If you look at the chart lower on the page, you'll see the total level of fevers in the country spiked in early March to over 5% of all readings, going well above the historical norms caused by flu, strep, etc. Since then, the percentage of fevers has dropped precipitously, down to 0.5% yesterday, less than a tenth of where it was a month ago. And you can click on individual parishes and see results as well.

This isn't definitive proof that COVID-19 infections are a tenth of where they were 25 days ago, because fevers from strep and flu are involved as well, but it's a tremendously strong clue.

So, we've likely done a tremendous amount to reduce infections down to almost nothing. You have to keep in mind that people who are dying now were infected at the peak. People who are testing positive now were infected 10-12 days ago, because they felt symptoms five days after infection, then it took them a 2-3 days to get tested, and then another 3-4 days to get the tests results back.

But at this point, we need to wait about three weeks before relaxing anything to let our hospitals clear out. Y'all, we have to be able to give those doctors and nurses working with these patients some breathing room. We can't have more people getting this disease right now. We also have to be able to open our hospitals so that person who's been waiting months for his knee replacement can actually get it done.

So, what Gov. Edwards is trying to do now is use this time that we have to drive down the back side of the curve really hard and fast. It matters a great deal whether, on May 1st, it's 0.3% of our population who is currently infected and on the street, or whether that number is under 0.1%.

And, as I said, businesses aren't going to open until May 1st anyway, because we gotta empty the ICUs and restock our PPE.

In the meantime, Gov. Edwards wants you to avoid that normal big family gathering for Easter that spreads the virus. Each week that goes by with our current enforced social distancing means that the percentage of people infected is dropping by half. If we stay home the rest of the month, we can basically eradicate the virus in the state by May 1st.

I think we will have done that in the next week or so.

We don’t need another 3 weeks.

I wish CDC would get numbers in Illness onset/specimen date chart faster. Once they started to include specimen date on March 24th numbers picked up, but they are still way behind. I would think all labs would include date specimen drawn, but maybe CDC still tries for onset first.

I hate posting columns here using mobile as they don't show well, but even though they have only updated for less than 160,000 cases. March 28th - April 7th is listed as in progress (with other dates updated as well & more recent days are very low as of now I just stopped when similar at current update numbers). It is showing an earlier but less steep increase for cases March 4th - 29th than test result numbers.

It's hard to know what's days are finished as even as they list days starting towards end of March & into April in progress they increased Jan and Feb totals from yesterday to today as well as more recent days.
