Supposed to show a presence, I’ll allow. They even give old cop cars to civvies to drive around for the same reason.

Somewhat, but if you drive past my wife or daughter stranded on the side of the road without stopping to check on them, you are an a-hole.

If you are in a marked vehicle, you are sorta on duty.

I think having a few parked around the ole hood helps make it safer. I know a few with take home cars. They usually have a few bucks a month deducted from their paychecks to help account for the personal use of it.

They have a limit. And some departments make you pay to use past the limit. I have no problem with it. Stopping at the gym or the grocery store on the way home after a shift is fine.

ETA: More cars out also means stronger police presence or at least the appearance of such. Cops are cops even when off duty. They can and should respond in the case of an emergency situation.

They don’t do that when they’re on duty?

It’s just like having a company vehicle. I think cops should be able to take home their cruisers, it’s a well-deserved perk especially considering their paltry government salary.

Almost all agencies require anyone in a marked to stop and render assistance until the district units arrive.

Most businesses and neighborhoods are happy to have cops use cars for personal business. Bad guys tend to stay away when they see a car parked in front.

So long as they aren’t abusing it I have no problem with it. People don’t know they are off duty so just shows more police presence. If they are abusing it frick em.

Had a cop as a neighbor once, he drove his cop car to and from work. Told me it was a reward and it could also be taken away as punishment. He didn’t use it for running around in, just to and from work.

I bet you use your pocket protector when you’re not at the pencil neck factory

Why don’t you go kneel during the anthem or something

There are a few policeman, whose houses I pass by on a regular basis, who work for BRPD, but don't live in the city of BR and their police cars are always parked and seem to use personal vehicle when not working.. And I know the sheriffs deputies in my area use their person vehicles when not working. I don't know about the city deputies.

I've seen policemen who were hired for security jobs use their police car to go do the job..

as i understand it, state cops can drive their unit anywhere, and can have passengers. but if there is an emergency, they must dump their passenger and respond.

i think it is a cheap way of putting units on the street. their presence should be a deterrent.
