NORTH CHARLESTON — Multiple police officers were physically assaulted, and several people were arrested, after a July 4th celebration devolved into gunshots and brawls.
North Charleston police officers responded to a permitted block party in the Chicora-Cherokee community around 8:30 p.m. on July 4 after receiving reports of gunfire and people launching fireworks toward vehicles, according to a statement the department posted July 5 on its CrimeWatch platform.
Despite efforts to inform attendees that the event was over and to direct them to leave the area, multiple fights broke out and additional gunshots were fired, the department said.
Several of the officers who were attempting to separate fights were assaulted, and two female officers sustained minor injuries, the department said.
Officers recovered multiple firearms and a “makeshift spear” from the scene.
Several people were arrested as a result of the incident, according to police. The department did not specify the number or nature of the arrests.
“Attacks on law enforcement are unacceptable and those responsible will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the department said. “The safety of our residents and visitors remains our highest priority. We appreciate the cooperation of the many attendees who complied with officers’ instructions.”
Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to the incident.

What’s happened to North Carolina? Thought it was a decent state, but these days everything I see is bad.

Back in the seventies in Nola that guy would be in bad shape at booking, even if he was white.
