I guess I grew up in a sexist family. My grandparents had a pretty big role in my upbringing because my parents were divorced and I lived with my dad, who was always at work.

I cut grass (almost 25 acres), changed oil, washed vehicles, shucked corn, shelled peas, plowed fields, milked cows. My paw paw had me on the tractor at 7-8 years old. He definitely didn't believe in sitting around doing nothing but we never did housework.

I mowed several neighbors yards, got about 2.50 a yard. Still had to do inside and outside chores. Always had to wash dishes after lunch before I could go out and play baseball. It killed me

Loved going to my grandmas farm. It was hard work for a little kid but I still loved that place.

I grew up in a neighborhood in the country but it was about 3/4 of a mile from my grandparents. I rode my bike over there daily. They had 45'ish acres.

In nearly every single instance the older product was a better quality product. The reason shite is so cheap now is because it is so cheap now.

If products now were built the same as they were back in the day the cost would be the same or more in some cases. Back then we were buying commercial grade products at the consumer level. Now we don't even buy consumer-grade products. We buy disposable products.

The price of trivial shite has gone down, but what about housing, transportation, healthcare, higher education, etc.?

Ahh, yes. You mean all the things government touches?

Funny how that works, isn't it? 4/4

My moms dryer in the 70s was kind of iffy. It only worked in specific weather conditions.

Man, I used to HATE when I'd go to my grandmother's and have to use her crunchy towels because they were line dried. She accepted the washing machine because washing clothes by hand was back breaking, but she grew up during the Depression and refused to spend the pennies to run the dryer unless it was rainy or freezing weather.

The towels might have been crunchy, but they were always stupid clean and smelled nice from being in the sun.

My wife is a country girl and still hangs some clothes and particularly bedsheets outside. We don't have a clothesline but we do have hooks under our breezeway

Every single one of those is comparing a middle of the road or top of the line product from the 70's with a bottom of the barrel discount bin Chinese rip off item from 2018.

Moral of the story: We need to figure out how to get China to do some of the top things for us.

Either witchcraft or the Department of Labor statistics, you decide.

Seems the government has some top secret method of finding out how much money Americans make every year and is able to use a calculator and average it.

I love how they put the cheapest shite they could find on the new part.

A $90 treadmill, $90 TV and a $270 dishwasher.

Most of these products were made in fricking Taiwan.

Do a comp with American made products and get back with me.

Now do trucks

Just bought a brand new car for $14,500 out the door that gets me from A to B. Could have bought a $50,000 truck instead, but didn’t want one. People will pay more for what they want than for what they need.
