The costs have gone down but I would question the durability of most of the "new" items versus the old.

Engineered to fail much earlier than their predecessors, especially appliances.

Essentially my sentiment on pg 1. A refrigerator, washer, dryer or ac unit would give you 20-30+ trouble free years. Now they are all plastic pieces of shite with unnecessary electronics.

And they were far more likely to be American made.

No doubt about it.

My dad still owns the ac unit, fridge, washer, dryer and microwave from my childhood. All still working fine. I refurbished our house with appliances in 2013 when we moved here. 75% of them have had some kind of problem.

Our oven is from 1978 and I won't let my wife replace it because despite the retro look, it still works like a champ

This is true for almost everything posted. A 1979 bike was light years better quality than a fricking $84 walmart bike. You could ride that '79 bike across the country. I'm not sure you could ride the walmart one across the county. And I'm not a "everything was better back in the day" kinda guy. Bikes now are way nicer than a '79 bike but you'll pay $500 and up up up. This example goes for almost everything.

Yep. My mom's blender is from the mid 70's, still runs great, and you could damn near power a go-cart with the motor. I've probably went through 3 or 4 blenders in the last 15 years.

I didn’t mean to be a douche in my OP, not sure why I am getting downvotes

I saw this posted by a well respected Ivy League economist on twitter

I did not at all mean to be rude if y’all took that from my post

Make that oven beige and in a brick wall insert and that's essentially what we have. 2 knobs and a knob timer. I know as soon as I replace it the computer system board will go out in my new one

Well, I didn't think you were rude. I just don't think the graphic tells the full story.

Even if your hyperbole is correct as stated, everything shown is reduced by 50% or more. So even if you have to buy everything twice to last as long, you STILL come out ahead.

My moms dryer in the 70s was kind of iffy. It only worked in specific weather conditions.

I don't think anyone thinks you were a douche. It's an interesting discussion point.

Must be a really shitty treadmill for 90 bucks. I once had one for 200 that was pretty crappy.
