they kept installing them on new ships after learning these to be a major contributing factor to inaccurate gunnery in WWI

Apparently in 1935 everyone was counting on British battleships to do the heavy fighting.

I take it if a battleship cruised through New York harbor these days, the anti American SJWs would all be protesting and throwing things at the ship

One of the most poignant moments of my life was standing on the Arizona Memorial and looking down at the ship. Knowing that it's the grave of nearly 1200 American sailors brought tears to my eyes. I wasn't the only one that day who was emotionally shaken by the history in that harbor.

If you tour the USS Alabama, you can climb inside the main turrets. What people forget is that a large number of men were inside those turrets during combat. The guy in charge of the turret sits on a small old-style tractor seat right next to the gun recoil space. If he isn't sitting perfectly still while the gun is shot, he's likely to get his leg amputated.

It's amazing what a man will put up with if he is motivated to serve on a team.

The USS Alabama in Mobile is a great site to visit. The ship is great to tour, and they have several vintage WWII tanks, artillery, and many vintage WWII planes within the facility.

My advice if you do go, get there when they open, so you don't get stuck behind school field trips.

Also, if your in Charleston, SC - check out the USS Yorktown Aircraft Carrier.

I never understood why it took so long for the US to move away from the cage lattice masts to the tripod ones.

The Arizona and I think a whole lot of US ships had the tripod masts before WWII though.

Agree 100%. It's a site every American should visit if they possibly can. There are other sites that bring out emotions in me...The Vietnam Wall, The WWII monument, The Korea monument, and Arlington Cemetery, all in Washington DC, and all something everyone who loves our country should see in their lifetime if they can.

Was stationed at Schofield Barracks from 91 to 94. Visited the Arizona Memorial during the 50th anniversary ceremonies. An incredibly moving experience.

My grandad served aboard the Iowa in WWII. He passed away in 1992 but I remember him telling me that he could still hear those guns.
