re: Convince me not to buy a Chevy Colorado

I just bought a 2015 Tacoma Crew Cab (2016-2017 body styles look horrible). Previously had a 2005 Colorado Crew Cab and drove it to 190k miles (my son now drives it). Loved the Colorado, but it has had some annoying electrical issues. Was looking at both the Colorado and Canyon but dealers were not budging off MSRP unless you were Military, GM Supplier, current Leasee, etc ... none of which I qualified for. GM Dealerships pissed me off so much I decided on the Tacoma and haven't regretted it. That said, the leg room is the back is a bit more cramped.

Recently traded a 6 yr old Sierra for a '17 Silverado. Sticker was in the 50's. Net trade was 16K. My son bought a Colorado from a different dealership same day and his was only 6K less than the sales price of the full size. I understand that's about $120/ mo difference, but in the end I would rather have the full size for sure if dealing with car seats.

Most reviews are pointing me towards the Colorado. I'm not too concerned with resale at this point because I plan to have it for 6-8 years.

I can get a pretty loaded 2018 Z71 (heated seats, navigation, all leather, etc) Colorado for the same price as the 2017 SR5 Tacoma. I like the body style of both about the same.

I have 2 carseats. Is there a difference in rear seating area?

I think that you will find reviews will go either way, but in the end it’s what serves your needs better. Both hit the interests of the mid size market well in my opinion, and that’s why they tend to be the obvious two to pick from in the end. I drove both, and I’d highly suggest you do the same as it is really the only way to really get a feel for what you want to be driving around in on a daily basis. I’ll give you some pros and cons I found with one over the other

Pros:

Colorado V-6:

- A few more gadgets and options like WiFi, On Star, and the like to pick from
- Screen looks a lot like your phone does and perhaps a little easier to navigate
- Back seat arm rest with coasters
- Partially powered front driver seat
- Ample leg room and spacious feel to it
- Attractive body style
- Spray in bed liner available
- Slightly more initial response time when accelerating
- A little better turning radius
- Has a bit more of a car feel to it when driving

Tacoma V-6:

- Wireless Phone charging station
- Seats more conforming, and durable
- Almost endless places to put drinks
- Back seat folds flat, and back of seat is a hard shell
- More storage compartments in back
- Bed liner comes standard, and loaded with ways to secure and store stuff
- Body feels more durable
- You have to be a bit more deliberate with the accelerator, but once it finds the zone it gets it. Depressing Eco is game changer when you need to be more aggressive
- Drives like you’re driving a nice SUV, very sturdy yet comfortable to drive. Feels heavier




Cons for both really depend upon what I think you’re needs are for a mid size truck.

If you’re going to put some miles on the truck and put it through it’s limits the obvious choice for me is the Tacoma. It just feels much more durable, sturdy, and will take whatever you dish out. You can feel it when you drive it.

If you’re going back and forth to work, shuttling the kids around, and with the occassional trips around town on the weekend, and road trips, and your focus is more on softer comfort and easy does it, the Colorado is a really nice choice for that, although my initial gut feeling tells me that it’s just not going to hold up in durability long term to that of the Tacoma.

Finally, I’d say that there is a very good reason that Tacoma holds it’s value longer, has a better resale, and a long reputation of being a very reliable truck. It’s well deserved IMO, although, that may not always be the single answer that everyone’s looking for in a truck. It is more expesive, and you may get 1-2k or so off price of truck in comparison to 3-4K off of the GM product in their rebates, but in the end I think it gets back to what your needs are. I seriously would not be as fixated on the price difference as I would in what’s the right truck for me, because in 6 months to a year from now, it’s going to be more about whether you choose the right truck for your needs than the difference in pricing between the two.

Colorado won motor trend truck of the year 2 years in a row. Buy the diesel. Yeah, Tacoma has no leg room and seats are hard. But, they hold their value and will last longer.
Like others said, rebates are huge now on full size. And for some reason small trucks don't get huge discounts

The early Colorados were really shitty trucks. They may well have improved the quality if the newer models are getting great reviews but its tough to shed that bad rep. And Toyota's great rep is well-earned.

I put about 185,000 miles on my last Silverado without any problems. Traded it in when gas prices were high.

I think the XLT is plenty enough features for a truck.

OP, get a full size. Two car seats fit easily in my Tundra. If you must get the small truck, get the Z71.
