re: Considering Purchasing a 3/4 ton Diesel

It’s not even a 2,000lb difference in towing capacity in a 5th wheel setup. If you need to tow something really heavy, you need a full 1 ton.

Most can, but shouldn’t, and when you do it will not be an enjoyable experience.
One thing I can recommend is to check the door jamb sticker. You would be shocked how much payload capacity you loose as you pile options on a newer 3/4 ton. My lariat crew cab diesel 250 has a lower tongue and pin weight rating than my friend’s similarly equipped gas 250. It’s fine for what I pull, but to get the capacity of my 06 I would have had to buy one with the heavier tow / snow plow packages or believe it or not spent about half those options price for a 350 at the same trim level.

I wouldn’t regularly tow more than 8,000 lbs with a half ton truck.

You need the one ton because your payload capacity is going to be just a little over 2,000 in a 3/4 ton diesel. If you get in a wreck with your family, camping gear, and the tongue or pin weight of your camper, an enterprising lawyer will only be too happy to show that you are overweight. Payload is a separate number from your “towing capacity”, it’s the vertical weight on your truck, not the weight of what you’re pulling.
If you are spending $60k+ on a diesel, spend the $1k extra and get the one ton over the 3/4.

Get a gas.
Skip leather trim.
Find a katskin dealer. Pick out the leather you want and save about $3500 in the process.

I traded a F150 for a platinum f250 6.7 powerstroke short bed. Highway at 70 to 75 mph it reads 21 to 22 mpg on the dash. Average mixed it reads 19 mpg.
I just wanted the diesel for a change. An oil and fuel filter (2) change is $160+ to $300 depending on oil. The def tank lasts a long time on 5 gallons.
I constantly get compliments on the truck. Parking can be a bitch in the city and I am a door ding stickler.

I went with an XLT F150 on my last one a d added katskin leather for about 1200-1500 extra. I have been very impressed with the quality of the trim and looks of it.

Get a 2020 F250 with the 7.3 Gas Engine.

Are you bringing cattle to market? Do you have a towing business? No? Just get a .5 ton and call it good. The ones these days would have counted as a .75 ton ten years ago anyway

Ine of my 3 trucks is a 3/4 diesel. I wouldn't want a gasser if you plan on a lot of highway driving or hills. The diesel blows the gasser away.

Everyone I know when5a three quarter pulls a trailer with a couple four wheelers. Pretty sure a gasser will do just fine with such a "heavy load"

Diesel > Gas when hauling or pulling anything. Period... End of story.

Get the narrowest diesel you can, so you can slip into the left shoulder on I-10/12 and burn coal on the inevitable a-hole going 5 under in the left lane.

Any opinions on jumping into the 3/4 tons regarding which ones to buy
For 2020 Ford has the best truck offered IMO. Get a 4 door long bed and you get a 48 gallon fuel tank which is awesome.

Damn right. My wife had them in the van we bought. Previous owner put them in. They are great. When my truck is paid off I'll be doing the same.

Get out your pocket book.
The cost to purchase a diesel does not get to you, the maintenance cost will.

Its not THAT bad. A DIY oil and fuel filter change on my cummins is about $150 and only needed every 15k miles.
Now if you break something out of warranty this conversation really goes to shite. Fail a high pressure fuel pump on a Ford and the cab is coming off to repair it, and you will have a $10k+ bill to pay.
As was said earlier, there is a reason all the fleet operators are going to gas HD trucks and a reason ford saw a need for the 7.3 gas burner. Financially it is almost impossible for a diesel to make sense. What it does for you is allow you to drag 15k pounds up a 7% grade and not slow down doing it.

What about when a gas engine can drag 16k pounds up that incline without slowing?

I wouldn’t own one unless it’s under warranty
