Part of the reason for the pivot to more criminal enforcement: The fines are not working as a deterrent. Not only has the robocall volume increased significantly, but the amounts collected through fines are appallingly small. Though the FCC has issued over $208 million in fines since 2015, it collected just $6,790, or 0.003% of the total.

Efforts to crack down are picking up steam, however. Many of the bills sitting in front of lawmakers now have provisions for lengthening the statute of limitations for robocalling to at least a few years from one, and a bill passed a Senate committee that would ramp up the prosecution of criminal robocalls.

Great news!

Fantastic. Let me know when the FCC conducts raids in Russia and Africa.

This isn't worth the paper it will be printed on if Congress doesn't write itself into the list of excluded people who can randomly call you.

I get more calls from Garrett Graves these days than Rachel.

Well, rooty-fricking-tooty for you but it doesn't work for me and millions of other people, hence the need for a new law with more teeth.

I am sure Political robocalls will be exempt

I am not sure a bill will do much good attacking the robocallers, as it is very easy for scammers to skirt the system.

The bill needs to attack the providers (ATT/Verizon/Sprint/Etc., Bells, VOIP companies) for allowing it to happen in the first place. You will see it stopped with a quickness at that point.

Could do the same to illegal immigration if the fined the crap out of companies caught using illegals, but that makes too much sense.

Well, over the half the robocalls I get are from numbers not belonging to the company. They hijack/mirror actual phone numbers belonging to other people.

I once got a robocall from MY OWN CELL PHONE number.

Hope it works. But if they can't even collect but a few grand in fines, how will they find the people needing to be incarcerated the most?
