For those of you who recommend quartz I’d like to understand why? It doesn’t seem to offer any redeeming qualities. It looks fake and not heat tolerant like granite.

We've had our black concrete counters for over ten years and we love them. Yes they etch a bit, but it's in the same stove prep area that we use pretty hard. The 2" thick slabs are look better than granite with a double thickness glued to the edges.

Totally agree.
Quartz isn't even natural stone...its a bunch of pieces glued together.

I have a slab of Leathered Black Pearl Granite in my laundry room. I Think it looks sharp. Could look good for a bar area imo.

Quartz - no maintenance and you can get ones that don’t look fake. There are so many options. Mine looks like marble without any of the headaches.

Marble is very soft. Try a granite or maybe quartz for something like a bar. The concrete is beautiful, but idk how it is as far as durability and maintenance.

The black looks good.
I wonder if just staining it a darker color would fix most of the issues. A black counter top can't show that many stains. Maybe oil stains, but red wine probably wouldn't even show up.

Neither. Marble is soft, absorbent, and scratches easily, and concrete is a sponge itself has to be topically sealed, highly susceptible to cracks, and certainly no sedimentary stone like travertine.

For a basement I'd use laminate (Formica is one brand). Less maintenance than about any other top and if it does get damaged or you just don't like it anymore, it's cheap, fast, and easy to replace. I'm a builder but I'd still prefer laminate in my own house if my wife would be ok with it. She likes granite.

It's dyed, so it's black through and through. There're no stains, but acids'll etch it to a lighter shade. I've sealed it with multiple types of sealers through the years, and even waxed them to prevent ingestion.
