Take the allowance plus reimbursement. No brainer really.

Allowance
It’s your car
They can’t track you or fire you for traffic violations

Im taking the 1K monthly allowance, finding the cheapest car lease I can, and pocketing the extra cash

Which are you choosing?
Assume 3k work miles per month
Company car. $.60 or so per mile and $1000 a month is about what it will cost you to operate, insure and maintain your car BUT the $1000 is income and taxed while the company car will only be taxable if you use it for personal use and whose gonna know, assuming you have another car available. It is damn near impossible to write off job related expenses as an W2 employee now.

Company car and gas. If you’re going to drive a car you own then the 1k and mileage.
The risk to taking the 1k and buying something new is you own the debt obligation. Get laid off or change jobs and you’re on the hook.
We always offered the monthly car allowance for this reason. Especially for people is sales roles. If they couldn’t make the numbers they were gone.

Definitely take the company vehicle. That situation is easily worth $15,000-$20,000/yr to you.

Allowance plus fed mileage, the mileage alone will sustain the vehicle. Invest the $1000.

My BIL has a work truck that he gets to use for personal use.
He also has a credit card in his name for gas and hotels, etc.
The rewards he gets from the credit card pay for his and the wife's airfare and hotel stays on vacation.

personally, i'm 100% taking the allowance and fed mileage

Easy choice.
Take the truck, claim the personal miles.
Even at .67 a mile+ $1K, you're covering cost the vehicle, insurance, maintenance, depreciation...
Plus, if breaks down or gets hit, they take care of it...

This.
A lot of folks are underestimating real cost.

I'd take the $1,000 and the mileage. At 3000 miles a month with a 67 cent a mile rate that's, an additional $2,010 a month.

Honestly I think I'd go with the car and gas card, but I guess that comes with some questions.
1. Can you use the car for personal use also?
2. Is there a limit on gas card usage?
3. How often is the car replaced?
4. Do you get a say in the make, model, or even type of vehicle you get when it is replaced?

But that is a ton of mileage to put on your personal vehicle. That's over 100,000 miles every 3 years JUST for work use.

So $3000 per month covers a new truck, all road expenses, great insurance, depreciation...
That's got to be awfully close.
Plus, the $1000 gets taxed, but not the mileage reimbursement, correct?

The money comes out to the $1k plus another $2k+ if you do 3k miles a month. This is a pretty easy decision and I think it's just a humble brag.
Posted on 6/26/24 at 1:18 pm to Wildcat98USA
Does the company require that you drive a vehicle that a certain age, make, model or color? I'm pretty sure I'm taking the $3k/month and finding a good cash back gas card.

What sort of vehicle do you have? How many miles? Paid off?
I'd lean towards taking the vehicle if it's me. I have a fairly new paid off vehicle, I don't need to destroy it with that sort of mileage.
