We're bidding a large data center project in California which we expect to win.

How bad have steel prices gone up? We'll be buying a ton of unistrut (16000+ ft) and 1/2" threaded rod (10000') plus assorted bracing and brackets. The structure we have to build is earthquake zone 4 so it will be a very sta ble structure. We've done two of these builds before but on a much smaller scale.

I have a feeling that I'm going to have serious sticker shock when I see the pricing.

TIA

You are building a multi-million dollar project and you are coming to the OT for supply pricing advice?

You haven’t gone back to your suppliers? I’m in industrial, depending on the material, some quotes good for a few hours, others a few days. I’d add some time for material delivery delays to schedule as well. It’s been a pita.

I don’t know about what you are buying but I can tell marine plate steel was over 2000 dollars a ton last I looked. Normally we paid 600 give or take

lol. better put something in your bid concerning material escalation. most of our material vendors won't hold pricing for more than 24 hours and we are lucky to get them to do that. I'm in industrial.

eta: this lump sum?

Yep, most vendors I deal with have reduced bid validity to 24hrs (or less).

I don't work in commercial construction, but have a stake company that machines medical and firearms products. So we buy a lot of stainless (17-4, 303/304, 400 series steel). I know that is a lot different than your material specs, but it can't be that far off even though we only buy in a year and a half what you're buying in one go...

If you haven't been keeping track of the price trend in a couple years, just prepare they anus. Thats even if you can find it by the time you need it. Our material costs have went up significantly over the past two years. We've had to requote a few of the medical jobs we have been running for a decade to turn any profit in it.

Our pipe supplier's have been operating under a 24 hour price for a few months now. We install fuel tanks and the tank manufacturers will spring price increases on you even after you put a deposit down.

No, we've sent out requests for pricing already. I know what it cost us a year ago. Just preparing my anus for the pricing to come.

It's not multi-million for us. It's probably $450-$500k depending on materials.

Depends on your last bid. Steel is down considerably from it highs a few weeks ago but unless your buying on the futures market, you won't feel that "relief" but judging by your post, you'll be in for a bit of a shock.

I'm in the the utility scale solar industry so we buy millions of dollars worth of commodities like copper, aluminum, and steel. All of which are wildly volatile and crazy expensive.

You don't have a clue the effort that we put into our work. I just haven't had to purchase it in bulk in over a year.

I work for a wooden truss manufacturer
depending on the size of the project and estimated start date our prices are only good for 14 days…

I’ve done a few jobs lately that were converted from steel to wood .. due to the long lead times on steel bar joist and steel in general..
Granted they were only 50-60 foot clear spans… any thing longer would need steel beams to break up the span
to get wood to engineer…

Whatever the supply house can pull for us. They're looking to bid it to various vendors of theirs due to the current market and the scale of our order. As long as the strut meets the spec requirements of 1 5/8" X 1 5/8" strut we can use whatever we can get.

that's not bad. any reputable distributor should be able to get that turned around within a few weeks. i know a ol' baw in houston that can ship you ice from alaska before it melts.

I meant y'all bid. Are you getting reimbursed for material on a cost + basis or is it included in your bid price?
