I had the opportunity to work in Paris for 6 weeks several years ago. I ate anything I wanted and drank almost a bottle of wine a night. Lost 5 lbs.

It wasn't just because I was eating less processed food. I was walking on average almost 5 miles a day.

Can't walk away a bad diet. You ate better over there. Walking only helped. Plus it's not like you walked 0 miles in the US.

It takes effort.

We just have a culture of instant gratification. Pretty much all problems we have stem from this.

Crazy thing is, this is no longer an issue. Was on the road the other day and stopped at Wendy's so I could eat and drive to save time. Damn spicy Chicken meal was around $9. Met up with a business partner at a local Mexican joint for lunch Friday and the bill for both of our meals was $21

ehhh, There's way more to the system of eating than calories in and out. Yes, it's the end result of negative calories to lose weight but high fructose corn syrup and other types of foods lead to overeating. Highly processed foods just aren't filling.

ummm when it comes to overall bodyweight, yes its as simple as calories in, calories out and i get that high fructose corn syrup isnt filling, but if it wasnt that, it would just be normal table sugar mixed in which is the same. the issue is food choices.

some are going to say sugar is more addicting than cocaine.....well i aint ever seen anyone go mainline a whole bag of sugar and every house has a bag. never seen someone suck some dick for some sugar either.

Eating 2000 calories of McDonalds or eating 2000 calories of whole foods that are balanced is a vastly different experience in terms of body composition and diet integrity

thats not true. once calories and protein are equated...nothing else really matters other than satiety. got like a million studies proving this to be the case and millions of food logs from IRL to prove the point.

Don't know why you're getting down voted. Everything you said is 100% true.

Calories in >>> calories out. It's that simple.

Sure, there are some genetics involved, meaning that some people gain/lose weight easier than others.

But the "I can't lose weight because of my genetics/metabolism/hormones/etc" is bullshite.

There were no obese prisoners liberated from German concentration camps. On the other hand, cows eat mostly grass, but they're fat.

umm cause people are lazy and dont like the truth.

i mean overall fatloss isnt hard

1) priortize protein
2) set a calorie limit of 10-11x bodyweight
3) weigh and log food.
4) get 10k steps a day
5) follow a proper free weight program that uses progressive overload 2-4x a week and make it fit your schedule.
6) sleep 7 hours every night

shite is a cheat code for anti aging and anti obesity but its too simple for most people to beleive and way too much effort for most people so they consider it unrealistic.

in fact it is cheaper
Cheaper in that you eat less so your portions are smaller, but not cheaper to eat healthier than to eat like shite all the time.

I used to eat terribly and then I had a come to Jesus moment with myself in my mid 40's. I've since lost 100 lbs and not only workout but do CrossFit 4 times a week and love it. I've done a complete 180. I say all that to qualify my statement that it's not "cheaper" to eat healthier. I can go into a grocery store right now and head straight to the processed foods and the bad shite in the frozen section vs. hitting the borders of the stores and buying fresh veggies and meat, and I can PROMISE you it'll cost me at least 25% more to eat healthier.

That's the fricked up thing about it all. I'm not saying that to use it as an excuse, I'm just saying it's fricked up that it's that way.

Hearing a lot about seed oils as a big factor in increased weights. It is not easy for the body to burn the fat created by foods that have seed oils in them.

That good food cost more than cheap, processed food?

It certainly can, but doesn't have to. One change over the past 40-50 years is that people used to use a lot of hand picked garden items and more people hunted/fished.

You can eat more cheaply, and it doesn't have to cost a fortune. It does take effort.

It's not just elsewhere. We went to Big Sky Montana and it looked like the same ratio. But yeah, by and large America has a problem.

You are conflating fat loss and overall body composition and the psychiatry of a normal person. Water weight, gut issues, gas, mood, and other contributing factors are with food choices, not just calories. Diet integrity is the number one priority when losing weight. People can pick and choose what diet they want but in the end, it's whether they can stay on it. Nobody normal is going to have 2000 calories from only Mcdonald's and be able to stay under 2000 calories every single day since it isn't filling. Scientific tests can say one thing but the real-world application is what matters. You understand this as you are an engineer. Scientists can say High performance concrete is the way to go but businesses and workers ain't gonna use it as it's expensive and difficult to work with.

Not necessarily. If you put a little effort into it.

Americans think "big" on everything: their houses, yards, cars, food, etc. and it shows.

We've created a population that got comfortable with, and now depends, on that existence. As others said that has lead to an abundance of processed, ready-made foods that are nutritionally worthless and just make us hungry again soon after.

Even take "fitness" as an example: If you asked a Dutch man what he considered to be fit, he'd likely reference being lean and/or something related to cardiovascular health. If you ask a teenager in America, he'd likely reference something related to strength training or body building and getting "big."

Not saying strength training is bad, of course, just showing the difference in priorities and mindset.

America is sick.

Just got back from Europe and the contrast is stark.

In the US, fatties are everywhere.

People were constantly working out in Paris. Runners, bikers.

Very eye opening.
