Comcast to combat cord cutting by limiting internet speed increases to cable subscribers

As streaming video continues to chip away at cable TV subscriber numbers, Comcast is making some of its Internet speed increases available only to customers that pay for both Internet and video service.
Last week, Comcast announced speed increases for customers in Houston and the Oregon/SW Washington areas. The announcement headlines were "Comcast increases Internet speeds for some video customers."
Customers with 60Mbps Internet download speeds are being upped to 150Mbps; 150Mbps subscribers are going to 250Mbps; and 250Mbps subscribers are getting a raise to 400Mbps or 1Gbps.
Comcast says speed increases will kick in automatically without raising the customers' monthly bills—but only if they subscribe to certain bundles that include both Internet and TV service.
"Cord cutters are not invited to the [speed increase] party," the Houston Chronicle wrote. "Only those who bundle Internet with cable television and other services... will see their speeds go up at no extra charge."
Presumably, Internet-only customers can get the new speeds by paying more or by bundling their Internet subscriptions with video.
ETA before people post no this isn’t related to net neutrality. It is problematic because of government sanctioned broadband monopolies around the country.

I have no problem with this. I also have no problem with data caps.
Cost should be based on consumption. No reason old people only using internet for email and shite using 10 GB a month should pay the same as a baw streaming 24/7 eating up 2 TB of data.

Who didn't see this coming when they did away with net neutrality?

This isn’t because of NN

The solution is competition. Some enterprising folks will see what’s happening, and the first commercial for their service will begin like this:
“Tired of slow Cox internet?”
“Tired of slow Cox internet?”

The problem with this is that the people on the bottom don't get great deals and the people at the top will continue to pay higher prices. Plus places, such as mine (around Arlington,TX), still only have one choice for internet. Time to dereg the system like electricity here.

I agree but that isn’t happening in many places.

You say this as Sprint and T-Mobile are trying to merge lol
I know that has nothing to do with Comcast, but I doubt we see space being taken up by anyone soon.

This isn’t because of NN, and while Comcast is a bag of dicks, they’re giving better service to customers who pay more. Every company in existence will take care of the guy who gives them more money than the rest.

Yet. If the opportunity is there to make money, smart capable people won’t pass that up.

Yep. And anyone who thinks otherwise is crazy. Pai fricked this all up.

Google tried this in Nashville. Comcast and ATT sued to slow them down. The "ra-ra free market competition this is America, dammit" argument is a fricking joke.

I think it's working exactly the way he and his handlers intended it to.
