Seeing the oil still leaking from the Arizona in person was one of the most incredible things I've ever experienced

For those who have gone, is an advance purchase/reservation needed? I missed out on Alcatraz when trying to buy the day of the visit. I reserved ferry tickets in advance for NJ (trust me, you will want to take this departure point instead of NYC) to Ellis Island & SOL but could have bought them that day. Headed to Hawaii with our then 15 & 17 yo kids to celebrate our 20th anniversary. I'm thinking at that age they should make that visit to the Arizona.

The other enemy country in the other theatre got the horns too.....with firebombing, especially Dresden. Stuck it to them something fierce.

I wonder if we would have ultimately entered the war without Pearl Harbor occurring? I assume we would, cause we'd all be speaking German if not.

No.

The time I visited the wreck, I made my purchase of the tickets literally the day of. There's a 20-minute movie that gives context to the attack and shows the attack itself, and then they'll put you on a boat and take you out to the memorial.

DEAR MADAM: I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant-General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Nobody talks like that anymore.

Pearl Harbor was moving. Arlington didn’t have the same effect on me, but the Normandy beach brought me to actual tears. Seeing the beach itself and then the endless rows of graves. What hit me the most was the thought that those men never knew how the battle and war turned out.

Oh they knew. I have no doubt about that. When I went to Omaha beach I made sure to go down there and walk it barefoot. I wanted to feel that slice of earth against my own feet and appreciate what had transpired there decades ago.

I mean an actual war. A serious, earth shattering country shaking war.

A civil war is coming. And it absolutely will be devastating.

Sometimes I forget the past was in color because all you see is black and white images. Color wasn’t invented until 1939.

You are definitely being dramatic.

It's as if some of you have forgotten that America has been at war for damn near two decades.

That you think the War on Terror is in any way on the same level as World War II shows your poor grasp of the topic.

Not even close to comparable. Our presence in the Middle East even pales in comparison to our experiences in Vietnam. Since the War on Terror began with our invasion of Afghanistan back in 2001, we have lost 6,790 military personnel to death in the Middle East. We lost 6,821 Marines KIA alone in the 35-day battle for the island of Iwo Jima in 1945.

We didn't have to buy in advance. It was awhile ago though.

One thing that struck me was the number of Japanese tourists there. I could never make up my mind if it bothered me or not.

The US knew the attack was coming. They let it happen so we could enter the war and get the support from the public. This has happened over and over throughout history and people like you still fall for it.

Go to Fred's next weekend. The 18-21 year old guys full of confidence and piss and vinegar are the guys that would do the fighting. There are more than capable and they exist all over this country.
