Maybe... but I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that a licensed therapist is going to have a far better chance of talking somebody down than the multiple cops who decided the best way to handle a person who was obviously in mental crisis was to shine a light in his face, aim their guns at him, and scream at him over and over to do something he repeatedly has told them he was too scared to do.
Did you watch the full video?

He also appears to be delusional and paranoid, saying he's seeing skin-walkers and he might have to go kill them. Yeah. So. Something going on in the head.
Yep, and the twitter article definitely gives more context than the NPR story.
I wonder what else is missing.
Maybe judgment should be reserved until all the facts are known.

Bringing police closer to the knife is the only way it hurts them and the end result of this situation disagrees with your conclusion.
It's easy to play the result like you did but the safest way for the officers to remove him from the weapons was for him to get out of the car, certainly for the cops to direct him to grab his weapons, especially not knowing exactly what weapons he had.

FWIW, meth showed up in his system via autopsy.

quote:That's pretty absurd to just allow someone to sit in their car for days if they wanted. DUIs will go down by huge factors if you do this. Why get out of the car and get arrested when you can just sit in your car for 9 hours, take a nap, and wake up sober and all the cops can do now is give you a ticket for speeding or whatever, no DUI.
Until the situation could be handled without filling the guy full of holes.
It’s one guy and an unlimited rotation of LEOs. What’s the limiting factor? Boredom? Impatience?

quote:Yep, I mentioned that earlier in the thread.
I'm 18 pages late to this party, but reading the OP it seems like the kid could have thrown the knives and hammers out of the car while still talking to the dispatcher and prior to the first deputy arriving on the scene.
He knew ahead of time those items might be a problem.
If he were that concerned about the weapons, he would have put them in the trunk before the cop got there.
He didn't likely for 1 of 2 potentially reasons. He wanted the weapon to protect himself, and he was so mentally out of it, he wasn't thinking clearly. I guess the answer was actually not one or the other, but both.
Based on what actually happened, it's clear he wanted those weapons to use on a cop if needed.

You can't tell cops they now have to start camping out because every intoxicated person can now sit in their car for as long as they want under the guise of "if it saves one life." that's not logical in any sense. We all gladly are ok with sacrificing lives for comfort and ease of use, but stittng in your car for 1 or 2 days straight is where we draw the line?
If it takes three hours and you don't have to kill someone isn't that worth the trade off?

The problem here is this guy being British and thinking knives are terrible weapons from the UK conditioning people to think butter knives kill. There was no reason to tell dispatch you have geology tools in the car. That info made the situation spiral out of control.
You’d have to be a real moron to think that’s what caused things to spiral and not inflated egos demanding obedience

I think alot of people just skim over a biased news story and think they know what they are talking about. Not any different than the chad read shooting where alot of people were wrong on that one and saying stupid shite. You are guilty also. There was no ego, the cops sat there with the guy pleading for him to come out for an hour offering everything they had to come out.

know the cops cant sit there for days but the only threat was inside the vehicle and it was limited to arms distance. Once the cops decided he had to come out of the car with the knife still in there it put them in danger and thus created the possible use of deadly force. If it takes three hours and you don't have to kill someone isn't that worth the trade off?
I’ll one up your take:
“Sir, we can call you a tow truck, and/or an ambulance, or we can head out. Let us know and we will proceed accordingly”

Id love to see the responses on here if the headline was deranged man on drugs that the police abandoned breaks into home and murders innocent family. Of course with body cam footage of that guy acting like that and a 911 call where the guy is saying he sees skin walkers and cars are trying to kill him.
Man we got some idiots around here.

If no crime has been committed, and no one is in danger?
Call it a day and head to your next call whenever you want. Call a mental health professional and head on down the road.
They received the same feedback during the interaction and ignored it.

This is the question the bootlickers have trouble answering.
But boy, ever since I said you were being irrational you've taken it up a few more notches, so I wouldn't expect you you to comprehend all the times it was answered.

quote:Agreed. This was discussed a good bit earlier but if this isn't a department policy and there isn't one of those on call, then you can't blame the cops obviously for not calling in the licensed therapist.

I have no clue if they do or don't have that policy but would reasonably assume they don't since that never happened here.

First off, he clearly was dui…. And wrecked his vehicle.
Now go listen to the 911 call and come back and tell me if you think this guy should be left alone in a residential area next to houses.

He was saying he had knives and was going to have to kill skin walkers. Who do you think is getting blamed if the cops leave him and he ends up stabbing a few people he thinks are skin walkers?

Another funny thing about the crowd saying to just leave, you can bet good money that if the cops did just leave him, and that same dude either decided to kill himself or went on to stab 3 people he thought were "skin walkers" all these same folks would be blaming the cops stating the cops sat on their asses for over 1 hour and just left him and did absolutely nothing to help this guy who was a clear and obvious danger to himself and others. That much is obvious.
