I've bee hearing for over a decade that the under 50 crowd either doesn't know how to or want to actually work. They want to sit at a desk and use computer screens.

You dumbassed keep on putting down boomers who actually know how to get things done.

Seems like that's a failure by Colonial to train their employees. If it's part of their job duties then how can they just refuse to do it?

My observation is that people no longer understand how stuff works. Them guys can’t read a manual gauge or know what valves to spin or how to run a compressor station.

If it’s not on the computer that’s as far as they can go.

Go to a parts store and try to buy an alternator for a 350 Chevy. They are going to look at you like you are green and have three heads. They are going to know what model vehicle it is in. When I tell them a 1988 17’ Mudboat they become totally lost.

This is so many professions. They know how to operate the machinery or programs in their little sphere of influence but when things get wrong it seems like most workers in many professions are dead in the water trying to dig beneath the veneer of technology that helps them do their jobs.

Not correct at all. Colonial’s operations are very knowledgeable and know how to run the largest pipeline in the country.
I don’t work in operations but I’ve been a colonial employee for almost 2 decades

Correct. Shell could no longer build refineries within budget or even operate them once they early retired all of the boomers.

Turning a valve by hand shouldn't need a whole lot of training. Unless you are younger than a boomer

Lots of this with people that work for large companies. I could never do it

Bamarep said this all along.

At the end of the day it's just pumps and valves. Bypass that shite and get on with it.

I’d believe it, but I think there is more to it. Contributing to people not being as mechanically inclined anymore is the fact that cars have become so hard to work on and complex. The days have passed when Johnny gets a car that doesn’t start and works all summer to get it running.

Braxton doesn’t think even know what an alternator does. Hell, I’m 45 and have never paid to have brakes shoes replaced on a car. I meet people my age think I’m insane for working on something as important as brakes. I just have to know my limits.

Automation allows for significant reduction in personnel over time. Did they just magically have the number of personnel required to run the pipeline on a day’s notice?

So why would executive leadership make themselves look inept and lie about that?
