Can someone please explain to me how the universities didn’t realize somebody was coming to the school as a fake recruit?
How can you fake coming in on waterpolo scholarship and never show up or anything??

It might not even be a scholarship. Pay bribe, get spot on team to gain admission to the university instead of competitive admissions, suffer career ending "injury" and leave team, stay in school.

They would come then “get hurt”, say they “didn’t want to play anymore” etc. The sports were so under the radar they didn’t pay attention after they were in

Damn - I know one of the coaches and his wife from past sports. Very sad, but he did get some great fundraising donations to his team.

I don’t believe they officially got a scholarship

I would bail her out

Like someone said earlier, they could get admitted on scholly and either "get injured" or just outright quit the team.
The sports scholarship might get pulled but they wouldn't kick the student out of school, especially if they were willing to pay sticker price to stay.

I would let her stay and be her prison pen pal and keep her commissary account stocked in exchange for conjugal visitation rights.

Wouldn’t it be awesome of Jay Bilas’ Son at Wake Forest were a part of this?

Seriously, almost everyone indicted is fricking BONED and are gonna end up with a federal felony conviction. The feds don't indict unless they pretty much have you dead to rights. Their conviction rate is something like 80-90% and in this case, I don't know if the judge is going to sentence the convicted ones lightly because these are privileged rich people using their money to break the law.
Aunt Becky's gonna get passed around faster than a free crack pipe.

Is USC considered that prestigious to be worth it? I mean Stanford is generally considered the best private school on the West Coast, but would Aunt Becky's girls be at a disadvantage by not going to USC of all places. It's known more for football than academics to the rest of the country.
she couldn't be an influencer at Loyola Marymount or Long Beach State or Arizona State?

I was thinking the same thing.
Didn’t they try to backdoor him into Princeton as a preferred walk on?
I figured that this was an outgrowth of that investigation once I started hearing about coaches being in on it.

I’m taking a guess that SC was of the proper visibility and location to be worth it.
ASU isn’t so close to Hollywood that you can turn being a sloot into a career overnight.

I'm not sure why she was going to college at all.
She clearly wasn't academic minded and she apparently already had a successful social media profile. Combine that with rich parents and looking like her mother and I'm not sure why dropping 6 figures to bribe her way into USC seemed like a good plan, even at the time.

Sounds like a pretty good scheme.

$500k for someone's kid to go to USC?
that's pretty damn dumb.

This is probably more of a perception thing for "Aunt Becky" and not the kids. The parents probably wanted the kids to have degrees from USC. Kids could probably have cared less and wouldn't have gone to school on their own.

Hollywood types thrive on how they are “perceived”.

Yes.
I don’t agree with it, and personally i cant stand USC.. but yeah, in most parts of the country (ie not the South) it is considered a prestigious school to get into.
