Cody Rhodes leaving AEW? Work or shoot?

I've always considered Cody to be the unofficial founder of AEW so this news that he and Brandi are leaving is pretty shocking.
Is it a work or is it for real? Could he go back to WWE?

The wrong Khan offered the right price. Smoke at Raw last night that he is signing with the Fed.

No telling with them.
Maybe they offered Brandi a lot of airtime on Raw because Cody can’t have a match without her being in the middle of it.

Hard to tell if it's a work or not. Rhodes' own message seemed less formal and more sincere, but it's still hard to tell.
It was known that his contract was coming up - as were many wrestlers' who started with the company a couple of years back.
But yeah, his character still seemed to be involved in the slow heel turn and Brandi was just getting her feud with Lambert under way and was just on TV last week, right?
Maybe his contract is legit up, he'll take some time off, do some other things, and come back.

Cody is very smart so he may be trying to make a Brian Pillman style worked shoot out of this.

Maybe they’re trying to turn his “boos!” into cheers.
It is questionable considering the two other shows he/they had on the TNT network, unless both of those shows are going down the tube.

Maybe AEW will see the rise of a new star known as The Midnight Rider II, complete with Cody's moveset, finisher, neck tattoo, promo style, and vocal inflection.

I was in the "it's a work" camp until I saw Brandi's message thanking Kulture City, the special olympics and the American Heart Association. I get it's wrestling but those aren't exactly organizations you kayfabe

Well look'ie there.....as I suspected the first defect from AEW to WWE would be an EVP.
I figured it would be Kenny and figured it would be at least another year before it happened. I never thought it would be Cody.
It may all be bullshite....but it is interesting nevertheless.
ETA
AEW folks are now on the clock to start telling us how much Cody Rhodes sucks.

Tony Khan should send him to the NWA to fight Matt Cardone for the championship, and send FTR to the Crockett cup and have them “officially” join the NWA. Then have Cardone, Cody, Nick Aldis, and FTR form an NWA faction to invade AEW (and have Ricky Starks and Eddie Kingston join the NWA side).

Wonder if it's just for a pay day? Cody was somewhat buried during his last stint (though I did enjoy the Stardust thing), and WWE creative these days has a habit of burying just about anyone not named Reigns, Lesnar, Goldberg, or Lashley.

After the boring Rumble, I haven't kept up. Who is rumored to be facing Bobby at Mania with Lesnar and Reigns going at it?

I've seen rumblings of Bobby dropping the belt at Elimination Chamber on Saturday

Those debuts that Tony relies on to pop ratings don't come cheap.

This would be awesome, but never going to happen.
I suspect Cody is negotiating with everyone.
He has (or had) two other shows at Turner. If he goes back to The Fed, it will be a hotshot to the title picture, that he won’t win at SummerSlam or have the WWE title for a minute or two.
At best it’s a 1 year deal with WWE. At the smallest it’s a 3-6 month deal.
He will certainly return to AEW before his career is over (which he says his at age 40) to capture the World Title.
Or this all a long term work where he tours Impact NWA New Japan GCW and comes back at Double or Nothing, All Out, or Revolution.
With all of his students at The Nightmare Factory basically AEW talent.
Or a revamped ROH is where Cody “buys” the company.
