Climbing Mt. Everest

How many OT baws would attempt this? I'll wimp out and say not me.
Didn't make it
Dude dies on his eighth attempt trying to climb Mt. Everest. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
You've got to be a little bit off in my opinion to try to climb to 29,029 feet. I mean shite, that's cruising altitude for a major airliner. I can think of a million better things to do - like sitting in my leather recliner, watching a ballgame and drinking a cold beer.

A Japanese climber who lost nearly all his fingers on Everest has died on his eighth attempt to summit the mountain. Nobukazu Kuriki, in his mid-thirties, fell ill and was descending on Monday when his team lost contact with him, his team said on Facebook. "Kuriki stopped responding to radio communication and we couldn't see his headlamp when we looked up from the bottom in the dark," the post said.

At the higher regions of Mount Everest, climbers seeking the summit typically spend substantial time within the death zone (altitudes higher than 8,000 metres (26,000 ft)), and face significant challenges to survival. Temperatures can dip to very low levels, resulting in frostbite of any body part exposed to the air. Since temperatures are so low, snow is well-frozen in certain areas and death or injury by slipping and falling can occur. High winds at these altitudes on Everest are also a potential threat to climbers. Another significant threat to climbers is low atmospheric pressure. The atmospheric pressure at the top of Everest is about a third of sea level pressure or 0.333 standard atmospheres (337 mbar), resulting in the availability of only about a third as much oxygen to breathe.[259] Debilitating effects of the death zone are so great that it takes most climbers up to 12 hours to walk the distance of 1.72 kilometres (1.07 mi) from South Col to the summit.[260] Achieving even this level of performance requires prolonged altitude acclimatisation, which takes 40–60 days for a typical expedition. A sea-level dweller exposed to the atmospheric conditions at the altitude above 8,500 m (27,900 ft) without acclimatisation would likely lose consciousness within 2 to 3 minutes.

It’s like $80,000 to attempt a climb, btw.

Maybe, but do any sherpas help you accomplish that?

So, this dude spent around $640K and didn't even make it - and died. Frick that. I'm good on flat ground.

That’s what the majority of people waste their good years doing, and then spend their later years telling their grandkids about all the things they wish they had done.
Ain’t no way I’d attempt Everest though.

The real problem is people who have more money than skill or brains want to climb it and will pay someone to carry all of their stuff to the top for them. Too many try this as their first big climb and dont know what they are getting into.
Theyre in it to cross off the list, not mountain climb. That doesnt improve their odds of survival in the end though.

I have actually started to train for it but not sure I will ever attempt it. Last week I made it to the summit of Driskill with out any oxegen or acclimation. Excited for the next step of the journey.

RIP, you sexy beast you.

Some sherpa last week set a record for most climbs to the summit with like 20.
Posted on 5/24/18 at 9:33 am to btnetigers
the problem is the number of climbers attempting the summit which is increasing the time exposed to the dead zone, no bueno to everyone on the mountain, frick dat...

K2 is far more treacherous.

I'm all about doing stuff instead of having stuff, and have done more than my share of adventures, trips, hikes, rides, races, challenges, etc., and will continue to do them until I can't anymore.
But the idea of doing a climb like this has zero appeal to me.
And it pisses me off to no end when books or documentaries refer to the climbers who do Everest as "heroes" or "brave". No, they're not either one. They're just taking a highly managed, expensive, calculated risk.

I’m in. I’m actually trying to build an OT climbing team. You can sign up on this thread.

Well I don't think he has to worry about the $640K anymore

I have no desire to summit Everest but I do want to do the trek to base camp.
