Flight attendant announces a veteran on board and people clap. How long has this been a thing?

It doesn’t happen all the time. It should but it doesn’t.
My last flight we had a few on board, they were placed in 1st class but sadly no announcement or applause. Maybe that was at their request?
Poor fellas slept the whole time.

I consider myself to be paramilitary. Do I qualify for a SWA drink coupon at least?

I absolutely hated wearing my ACUs in the airport. People would come up to me while I was eating and want to thank me and talk. It was nice and I know they meant well but I usually just wanted to be left alone

paying, or should I say overpaying of respect to anyone wearing any part of a military uniform became in vogue during the first Gulf war, largely in part for trying to overcompensate for the shitty treatment of VN vets, what are some of the most respectful and somber/sobering moments that I've witnessed were when I was flying Hawaii trips for a couple of years, it was not uncommon for us to be transporting veteran remains(accompanied by an escort,) back to the mainland for return to their families, from all eras, we never stopping looking for our lost and I'm sure we never will, the respect shown by passengers that remain completely quiet and seated to allow the escort to deplane to go onto the ramp so that the remains are never unattended throughout the journey home is one of the most awesome shows of spontaneous, unplanned respect I've witnessed, the people didn't know anything about the remains on board until about 20 minutes prior to landing, and this is after an approximate eight hour all night flight

I had a few classes with this girl at LSU. Only knew her well enough to say hi, the only other thing I knew about her was that she was a KD. Years later I read about she and her brother's journey to Vietnam to look for her father's crash site.

it's really incredible some of the stories behind remains that we transported, WWII, Korean, Cold War(really remarkable because not only were they lost but most families were never told anything about the details as to how they went lost, until they were brought home,), and VN
ETA: work with a guy, Hornet driver, whose Dad was shot down circa Olmstead, there were accounts of his capture and sightings of him being alive shortly before all POWs were released, he didn't come home, his son and wife have never stopped attempts to find him, sadly his wife committed suicide a few years back, but his son, my co-worker, will probably go to his grave agonizing over this one day

Does it upset you that they recognize veterans?

Rightfully done and appropriate for today
Although like many vets I typically don’t like that kind of attention

Happens on every 100th Anniversary of the end of World Wars.
Get used to it.
Don’t be surprised in August of 2045 when it happens again.

He probably won't have to worry about it if he books a flight on All Nippon Airways.

I think it is appropriate in any day, but yeah it makes you feel good and you appreciate it but I never liked the attention.
