He is saying "just" the major magnet schools .. you have solid parental involvement a number of schools in this parish .. There are some strong PTAs in EBRP ..

I have too many EBR public school teacher friends. I'm forever a doubter of the general student population

Checking in ankle bracelets at their desks? Nerp. Wouldn't want my kids in a class like that.

I was hoping they'd get the chance, just to see how they handled the "no new taxes". Sort of like a civic petri dish.

It's gettin good on the St. George Facebook page. They seem to think this is far from over. they must know something we don't, because I wouldn't think that politicians would lie to me.

No one's claiming it's crime free. But to say you wouldn't live on say Capital Heights, because there's "crime, crime, crime" is flat out ridiculous.

I recently bought a house in Shenandoah--the epicenter of the St. George movement--and had an attempted break-in within two months. Deputy told me he had responded to about 10 calls in the area that day. Crime is everywhere.

yea break ins are all over BR. The only real way to have break ins go down in an area is home owner happen to be home and blow away the criminals.

I know the system besides a few key schools don't have good parental involvement.

I have 10 rental properties that I rent to EBRPSS teachers. Funny, they either send their kids to private school or schools in Ap or LP due to spouses working in those school systems. I have a couple that is retiring after they hit 20 years at the end of the 2016 school year. They are not staying in EBRP. They claim they have jobs lined up in Texas. Sad part is their child is attending St George instead of his neighborhood school. If schools are so great why are they leaving and why is their child in a private school.

To me that is a bad sign that teachers who teach at these schools do not trust the EBRPSS.

Can't answer the second part, but drawing your retirement from one state while teaching full time in another state is a pretty sweet deal financially.

FTR, The Magnet program is INFINITELY better than AP or LP. And many non-magnet schools are on par with many from those parishes. If you moved the best 100 teachers in the nation into the worst Baton Rouge Schools they would still be banging their heads after the first day. And as long as dead-enders are coddled, it will stay that way. Doesn't matter if you call it 'St. George or EBR it will never be better than the kids who comprise the Student body and St George will still be subject to the same federal guidelines and teacher's unions that EBR is.

I propose a three tier system.

1. Expand the magnet program.
2. Clean all the shitbags out of the neighborhood schools so they resemble where we went as kids.
3. Warehouse the worst behavioral kids .

Bottom line, you have to REMOVE the kids from the system that make learning impossible and you have to do it with enthusiasm. Doesn't matter what the name of the school district is.

My father was renting to teachers for years. At this time he has 4 teaches renting from him because he tries to hold his yearly increases down for them. If you work with them you always get paid. Their employment is very stable and they are on average more responsible.

AP, Brusly, and Livingston Parish have one thing that makes them great parental involvement.

BR besides the major magnet schools do not have this.

The same thing will happen because history repeats itself. SEBR will become NBR or will the NBR line lower itself over SEBR.

By the way when I was little NBR was North of Choctaw. Now people call anything North of I-12 NBR.
Let's get the line straight its North of Choctaw.

1970's - people that cared left NBR
1980's- people that cared left Baker and rest of the parish people slowly trickled out.
1990's to present- people that cared flocked to the better school systems where parents were involved.

Present - I don't see the flow of middle class families rushing back to live in EBRPSS districts.

If you notice the business that cater to the middle class follow the people.

Not to say you're completely wrong, but I've seen nothing but major progress in BR in the last 5 years. You are obviously are not looking in the right places. Some of the most solid property values in the entire parish are within the confines of Midcity BR. My home recently appraised at $55,000 more than what I paid for it 4.5 years ago.

If I had to choose an up and up area to confidently invest in it would be some of the older and more established neighborhoods in Baton Rouge....There are way more businesses that cater to the middle/upper middle class near Southdowns, Mid-city, Kennilworth and downtown than anywhere else that I can think of. Think Rouzan, Alamo Drafthouse, Movie Tavern, Trader Joes, Whole foods, LeBlancs Frais Marche, etc. Unless of course your talking about new big box, strip mall crap that needs lots of open land and high traffic counts to succeed. I prefer that stuff be further away from my home anyway. That being said Costco is about 1.5 miles from my front door if I need it.

The schools still have issues though, but I've seen major progress and expansion of the G&T, magnet programs especially at the elementary levels. The missing piece of the puzzle for me has been solid and predictable leadership. If the new superintendent has any sense he won't just blow off the concerns of the St. George movement. He needs to make schools safe havens for kids who WANT to learn and not daycare for discipline problems.

EBRPSS has always been vindictive when challenged. Starting when Parker blew it all up in 82.They hate being challenged and there have always been bad actors within the system. And if EBRPSS doesn't heed the warning here they will be missing a great opportunity. They need to expand the Magnet program with great haste for a starter and take on school discipline in the regular schools with the same mandate the Magnet schools have.

I live in one of the middle/upper class areas in BR. Its nice as flowers around here, but our zoned elem/middle school is completely crap. Kids bussed in from who knows where.

Absolutely ZERO kids in our neighborhood go to any EBR school, besides that maybe a few go to the "real" magnet schools.

All i ever see is kids in private school uniforms around here when im out.

The school you are talking about might draw the bulk of it's student base from poorer areas. Elementary schools are smaller so draw from smaller areas. However, if I'm not mistaken many local elementary schools must draw from outside of these areas to fill seats because neighborhood folks won't send their kids to neighborhood schools or those kids are from an underperforming school (pretty much every school in NBR). This perception is changing and despite the disfunction at the EBRPSB changes have been pushed for and achieved.

With recent progress at LaSalle Elementary, Glasgow Middle (among others) and existing good schools like Shenandoah Elementary, Sherwood middle, Westdale Heights, Baton Rouge Visual and Performing Arts Center (Walnut Hills) I think it's possible to have an overall better school district if people push for it, which is why these good-to-great public schools exist to begin with. It's an uphill battle for sure, but not as bleak as some think.
