Where I live, Bozeman MT, from I-90 if you ignore the obvious scenery and mountains everywhere and focus on the city itself.

Area around Main Street exit is a dried out marsh with old run down train tracks running through it, all you see of the 7th St exit is Walmart and hotels to the south and industrial and hotels to the north, and all you see around the 19th exit is hotels, Costco and Bozeman Ford.

It’s supposed to, and much of US 90 has been upgraded to interstate grade

Ahh I need to go that way one day to New Orleans down 90. It would make way too much sense to have a complete northbound interstate but I will say even with the 75 mph speed limit on 49, its a boring stretch of road.

Pretty much any main artery is going to look utilitarian.

Nashville looks nice from I-65 going in either direction.

I was passing through Laurel once and stopped to eat. Didn’t realized how run down the city looked. It was pretty depressing.

Drive I-95 from Richmond, VA to Boston, MA and you’ll conclude everything you’ve mentioned is a virtual paradise compared to that stretch.
My first thought was Richmond, Baltimore and Philadelphia.

Gary, IN. Ugliest I’ve seen in the US.

Yep. Here is what you pass

-Steel mills
-Sewage treatment plant
-An airport that gets no commercial flights
-Boarded up houses
-A sad and dilapidated downtown where the two tallest buildings are a housing project and a vacant office built

I’ve read through the ones posted. Most of the cities people say are ugly have some sort of naturally scenic view that’s not impeded by trash.

The two worst in my opinion:

Gary, IN
Juarez, MX

Lake Charles is one of the more impressive downtowns from the interstate, at least going west to east. If going east to west, your eye is probably drawn in by the plants.

Lafayette has no interstate presence.

Lafayette has to be the weirdest 100k population city in the country. You don’t see a single tall building downtown from I-10.

You can see downtown Lafayette from I-10 but you have to really know where to look. It also helps if you're not the one driving.

a better question would be what city looks good from the interstate?

I wouldn't say "good", but Baltimore doesn't look half bad at all when you drive through. The interstate takes you through the harbor, and all the communities you see on the way to the harbor don't give the same vibe you get from the days of Freddie Gray.
