It's not even a federal holiday in Mexico. The real celebrations are regional (forgot the area/city). So it's a true holiday in a sense in a small pocket of the world.
Americans co-opted it, as we do.

No drinking for me today but yes I will be having some mexican food today with an ice cold "Hecho en Mexico" Coca-Cola and will tell the waiter "grassy arse" after he brings it to my table.
