I don’t know if there is a “The” beginner cigar. The first time I went to a cigar lounge with a buddy who was into them, he grabbed me an Illusione Epernay. Still keep a few around.

Would highly recommend avoiding medium to full bodied cigars if you’re trying to learn to like them. Something with a Connecticut wrapper should probably be your first pick. Smooth, light bodied, without a harsh finish.

Brick House Connecticut is my favorite.
Rocky Patel Vintage 1999 Connecticut is another good one.

I’m currently enjoying a Java Mint Toro. It’s delicious.

Good advice. Overall, they’re harder to find, but definitely worth it.

My first real introduction to the world of cigars was from a buddy who had some Cubans imported. For the life of me, I can’t think of the brand right now. Possibly due to the Crown I’ve been imbibing out here by this Gulf Coast campfire tonight. Anyway, my ordination into the cigar world was the darkest, heaviest Cuban imaginable. It was definitely good, and better than the few hundred others I’ve smoked from elsewhere since. But, it damn near turned me off the whole deal.

ETA: Cohiba. It was a Cohiba. Not sure why that name escaped me, other than the aforementioned Crown-induced impairment.

I would recommend an AJ Fernandez New World Connecticut. It’s priced very well and is very approachable. Most tobacconists are going to suggest a Rocky Patel Edge or maybe a Perdomo Champagne. I find those both leave an aftertaste that you might not care for.
