Other than a few exceptions like the Maya, Inca, and Aztec, almost all of the America’s per-Columbus was populated by stone-age hunter/gatherer societies.

Throw the Mississippian societies in there and you’ve basically listed a large chunk of the Americas

Just as I said we cannot judge Columbus by today’s standards, the same holds true of the native tribes of the Americas. They, like Columbus, we’re a product of their times.

Yep, if Columbus hadn't come over, the New World would still be untouched, pristine wilderness.

Certainly, the Russians, Chinese, etc., would respect the purity of the indigenous tribes and leave them alone for the 1,000 years they needed to catch up to their European and Asian rivals.

Maybe by now, 500 years later, they would have discovered the wheel? Probably not.

Columbus was slandered by his court enemies, who accused him of doing what they were actually guilty of.

Well, like I said on page 1, there was contemporary opposition, mainly from religious sources like the Dominican missionaries (and later on De Las Casas). This led to the attempt of the Spanish government to regulate interaction with the natives, and the winding down of the encomienda system that Columbus instituted in his area.

"Let's take this in the back, yeah that's what Vito did."

This thread is getting off track, and I'm damn fine with that.

Weren't most of these stories written by a rival after his death? Idk. Either way, America needed discovering by Europe, and also brutality is bad.

It’s an acronym for “With Out Papers”

If calling a black person the n word is not allowed then calling an Italian American A “WOP” should fall in the same category.
It shouldn’t be used so loosely on a public forum.

Nothing more shallow and self serving than getting all indignant and self righteous over changing values from people living 500 years ago. Good gracious man. Do you need a gold star?

The more people say it, the less offense it would give, and it would become just another word. The taboo gives it power.

What are the sources for this?

The work of Francisco de Bobadilla, who was sent by the Spanish Crown to investigate several complaints they had received about his rule in Hispaniola. Bobadilla's report to the crown was long thought lost but was found in the mid-noughties in a library in Spain. You could also include Bartolome de las Casas in this, as he was a friend of the Columbus family, and his views about Columbus were a little more measured. I don't think there exists an English translation of Bobadilla's original report, and the only direct quotes we have of it is contained in the book 'La caída de Cristóbal Colón. El juicio de Bobadilla' which was published in 2006.

The situation in Hispaniola was complicated and by all accounts Columbus was an ineffective leader. According to Delaney, Bakewell, and a few others, Columbus was trying to ensure that the settlers did not attack the natives on Hispaniola, but he could not control the settlers who he brought on his second voyage. A rebellion led by Roldan caused major issues, as these settlers wanted free reign to plunder the natives. Bobadilla was sent to investigate when rebel settlers returned to Spain with slaves. Bobadilla did not like the approach the Columbus brothers had toward law and order, in which they tried to apply the law equally to both settlers and natives. At the same time, Columbus's decision to enslave the tribes on neighboring islands proved fatal for his own rule, as it arguably set the stage for issues during his governorship.

Arguably, you could make the case that Columbus was less severe on native groups than later Spanish governors. Indeed, when the new governor from Spain was to arrive, the natives planned a feast with many tribal chiefs. The governor, Nicholas de Ovando had the chiefs gather in a building made of straw and then ordered his men to set fire to it.

quote:

The theme of colonialism was use your technology to takeover lands and resources from those with inferior technology.

That is absolutely not the theme of early Spanish interactions in the Caribbean, Mesoamerica, and South America. It wasn't really the theme of colonialism anywhere, if you look at the source material.
