Well that makes tearing down the statues perfectly ok then.

Didn't say that all. But they probably should've been brought down before now.

Vikings, Asians across the Bering land bridge, etc. were all here first. I blame public education for continuing to prop up Christopher Columbus at this point when he pretty clearly wasn't first.

From the article:

However, critics say his trip began the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Using that logic, we should blame the Vikings for the African slave trade since they beat Columbus to North America by about 500 years.

Native Americans were taking slaves long before Leif and the boys showed up.

This, like everything else, is the fault of Boomers and their sexual revolution.

And Old World civilizations were centuries before that. We all know none of that matters, though.

Not defending the destruction of public property, but hasn't it been well established that Columbus was a giant a-hole? Weren't his statues and holiday done just to appease Italian-Americans?

So who's contributed more to the game of football, the first guy to throw a forward pass or Tom Brady?

I hate to say it, but you're right and it's a damn shame.

I didn’t even know there was a Christopher Columbus statue in Boston.

I appreciate their homage to The Simpsons though.

He brought in an era that saw the actual development and population of 2 continents. It's more significant because those other groups basically left, having given up on any attempt to settle here. He sailed into what most people at the time thought was oblivion, the edge of the world, certain death.

And human migration from 25,000 years ago doesn't count.

But okay. I don't mind talking about MLK doing coke and beating the shite out of his wife for the rest of my life. Tell me who your heroes are. I'll deconstruct them all.

Are we certain the protestors didn't mistakenly think the statue was of christopher cuomo?

Well Columbus did bring about thirty different diseases with him that helped wipe out several Native Americans. So there's that.

But it's a silly analogy. The natives that came across the land bridge were here for thousands of years before Columbus and some Native Americans still carry their DNA today.

And those same Native Americans were taking slaves and practicing human sacrifice. So there's that.

The point being we can do this all day, because at the end of the day, every single nation, tribe, state, peoples, etc. has some seriously nasty shite in their past. So to continually harp on it for one group, while simultaneously ignoring another, is nothing but selective outrage for political gain.

In all my history lessons as a child I was never told no one was here before Columbus. His feat was a scientific breakthrough for the world that took centuries of knowledge, science, and a huge set of balls to complete. But we can't acknowledge that because he was just some a-hole who diseased some people.

That's nice.

But that's not what my initial post was about. It was simply why are we still honoring a guy because he was "first" when he wasn't. By a long shot.

Every leader over the history of time has had flaws. Nowhere did I harp on that other than to point out Columbus was also flawed.
