Who cares if he wasnt the first person to technically discover America. What matters is he was the first to discover in the modern world, so to speak.

Of course it is. When you're self identity is wrapped in always having a "noble crusade to fight" then you can't just stop once you achieve a "goal". You have to find another wrong to right. Otherwise you lose your identity.
Case in point, when the mayor and the usual suspects were raising hell in New Orleans as few year back fighting to take down the confederate statues there, some dumbass spray painted "tear it down" on the Joan of Arc statue. JOAN.OF.ARC!!!!
This isn't going to stop with statues. The eventual target will be the names of towns/cities/counties.

Everyone always knew Columbus wasn’t the first person in the Americas. Obviously there were already people there. But a small Viking settlement lost to history is irrelevant. Columbus opened up two entire continents to the West. And like it or not, at least for now, the US is a western country.
