The Asiento, the official contract for trading in slaves in the vast Spanish territories was a major engine of the Atlantic slave trade. When Spain first enslaved Native Americans on Hispaniola, and then replaced them with captive Africans, it established unfree labor as the basis for colonial mass-production. Subsequently, in the mid-nineteenth century when most countries in the Americas reformed to disallow chattel slavery, Cuba and Puerto Rico – the last two remaining Spanish American colonies – maintained slavery the longest.

Between disease and genetics, Native Americans didn’t hold up well to agricultural slave labor.

So, are the vandals going to jail for vandalizing? They should.

He didn't discover America. I don't know why our schools keep pushing this lie. The lands were already occupied when he arrived.

Shut up moron. It’s from The Sopranos.

I thought it started a century later but it seems started in 1511. But still the Spanish farmed the actual collecting and selling of slaves to the Italians and eventually the British and Dutch. They just pocketed the change on selling the rights to the trade.

He was human garbage.

I don't give a shite who the statue is for, since when do we not care about ppl destroying property? What would have to happen and how bad does it have to get before we allow law enforcement to start enforcing the law?

It's genius politics. Get people arguing about race 24/7 and they'll overlook that fact that people are literally claiming 6 blocks of a US city as their own sovereign territory (lol) and destroying both public and private property in almost every major city in America. It's progress tho, you just don't understand!

Bigger question probably is why we're still talking about and honoring a guy who wasn't even close to the first to "discover" America at this point.

This is such liberal nonsense. Who is claiming he was the very first person to set foot in America

His real name was Cristoforo Colombo

It didn’t sound English enough so they changed it before his “1492 voyage”, and we’ve written it like that into our history books ever since.

"Columbus" is the Latin version of his surname. It was customary among European elites of his time to know and use a Latin version of their names, e.g. in published writings or in a foreign country.

In Latin America and Spain they call the man Cristobal Colon. In Italy they presumably call him what you posted. There's certainly nothing nefarious about any of that.

So who's contributed more to the game of football, the first guy to throw a forward pass or Tom Brady?

Well Columbus did bring about thirty different diseases with him that helped wipe out several Native Americans. So there's that.

Well, any Old World explorer would have done that. Not like Columbus loaded up a small pox bomb and dropped it.

This is appropriate. It’s not like he actually discovered shite. The land was already inhabited by natives.

Why do you think he was considered the first person to discover America? Because the Euopeans... didnt know about America.. until he discovered it.
So until the Europeans know about it ....?

The funny thing about the myth of the Columbus "discovery" is Mexico had a relatively advanced civilization with more people than Spain. The America's had more people than Western Europe.
