Is it safe to walk through downtown? Im booked at the super 8 motel for the moment. From looking at the map it is about 2 miles from the river. I won't mind the walk over time as long as it's safe. The Hampton is nicer bit 8 miles away and I'd prefer to drink if I go all that way

If it ain't safe to walk through downtown Natchitoches, then I don't want to live in this world.

You may want to watch out for the Baptists. I hear they get a little rowdy once the sun sets.

I hate to step into this so late, but I just read the thread and I am not crazy about your plan...

If the Hampton is open, I would book it without another thought and consider yourself very lucky to get it. The traffic around the festival will be crawling, so as long as you are not just shite faced, you won't have a problem driving the stretch to the interstate....it is an absolutely straight shot with no stops or anything.

The super 8 is out by the lake and has a good restaurant nearby, but has really nothing else going for it. I wouldn't be totally comfortable walking two miles to front street as there are no sidewalks along most of the way and contrary to what all of these folks are saying, there are some pretty shitty parts of Natchitoches.

Honestly, it is not totally unreasonable to drive back to Alexandria to stay, as it is only a little over 30 minutes.

what you need to keep in mind is that Natchitoches is a charming town, but it is very, very small...this event is noting at all like the festivals that you have in south LA...however, it is an absolutely beautiful Christmas lights display and a legit world-class fireworks display.

If I do end up stuck at the motel 8 will I encounter any police on my 2 mile ride back or will there be heavy traffic in that route as well?

I agree with spankum. Natchitoches is fairly safe but I would never walk at night. There are some shady people around. And NO WAY would I stay at Super 8 over the hampton. We have driven back to the comfort inn by the interstate after a few drinks.

I would not expect to be hassled by police anywhere unless you are acting like an arse...as I remember it, probably 90% of the folks in attendance will be drinking. just be discreet with it and you won't have trouble.

yes, the town is a very small one and will be so inundated with people that the traffic will be very slow on all streets around fireworks time...think LSU football game-type traffic.

all that said, it is totally manageable if you get there early and lay around and relax for a while after the fireworks are over.

fwiw, don't forget to bring a blanket, as it is typical to spread it out on the ground to watch the fireworks.

if you haven't checked the church street inn, do so. extremely unlikely that they will have any, but it is my favorite place in town to stay.

don't get down, if you stay at the Motel 8...but I would drive to front street area earlier in the day and park and just plan to hang out all day until the traffic clears. the front street area is small but is totally charming.

talking about it makes me want to go!

The Front Street area is quite safe, but I would not be keen on walking from there back to that motel. Some of the hoods through there are kind of sketchy, and good sidewalks and street lights can be in short supply.

Traffic will be bumper to bumper. You probably won't exceed 3 mph on the way back.

Any thoughts on the Fairfield inn and suites by Marriott. Just spoke with them and they have a few rooms? How far is it from the festival?
