The Fairfield is newer than the Hampton. I would expect it to be better than the Hampton but I haven't stayed there so I can't give you first hand experience.

Just an FYI, I live here in Natchitoches and Christmas Fest is going to be a complete shite show this year because of controversy surrounding the Confederate flag. The mayor of Natchitoches was approached by a group of individuals offended over groups like the Sons of the Confederacy walking in the parade with their flag. Mayor banned all groups from marching in parade that displayed flag. This has caused a complete shite storm and has been the talk of the town for the last few weeks. There have been shirts with the flag on it that have been sold by one of the businesses in town. Folks are going to be wearing those shirts and displaying their flag all up and down the parade route. Seriously. It's going to be ridiculous and I wouldn't be surprised to see some bad shite happen. Lots of other groups have withdrawn from the parade for safety concerns.

There's seriously a good bit of concern from people over what could happen. A lot of the parents are pulling their kids out of the parade and I know a lot of people that just aren't going to go out there at all because they're concerned about having their kids out there around all the nonsense that could happen.

Spoke to a police officer friend of mine last night and he said there will be close to 300 cops on duty Saturday. Which is more than double the usual number. Cops from other parishes being called in to assist.

Just out of curiosity what are they concerned about? I know nothing about the demographics of natchitoches but I wouldn't think there is a huge African American population who would really cause a bunch of trouble about this.

I would not walk to the Super 8 this weekend (or any night down Texas Street). The Hampton has great service - the other hotel is right across the street from the Hampton and would be a great choice as well. There are rumors of conflict due to the controversy regarding the flag. A lot of locals are staying away and some parade participants, including the Shriners are not participating due to safety concerns. There's not enough of a distance between the hotels to justify staying at the Super 8 in my opinion.

The City of Natchitoches is actually something like 53% African American as a lot of the Caucasians live outside of city limits.

I think there's just concern in general over disturbances breaking out from those that will be displaying their flags along the parade route in protest. I can easily see some redneck waving his flag, somebody confronts him about it, and then shite starts hitting the fan. There's a lot of stupid rednecks up here.

Find a bed and breakfast. Way better. That's what we started doing when we go there. It's pretty sweet

Didn't know any of this. oP keep up posted on the drama this weekend. Shouldn't be to bad though because it'll only be the blacks that live there. I've Never met a brotha that said "We got a bed and breakfast this weekend in Nach to see the lights". Nope....

That is a walk through the middle of the hood. As long as you don't drive like a jack arse you will be fine.

Switched my reservation to the Fairfield by Marriott as they have a downtown shuttle. Not trying to become a statistic walking through the hood.

hall of fame was a joke. expecting way more stuff in it. sorry, my 2 cents.

It's Christmas lights, a fireworks show and a hall of fame. I'm actually expecting very little. I'm not expecting it to be a life changing event. Still figure its worth doing at least once.

It's terrible. Drink a lot so you won't suffer through it.

I love the xmas festival and I'm pretty upset I'm missing it this year. I have heard of the mayor banning the confederate flag (hes a douche) so I'm interested to see how it goes but I think everything will be fine. Me and CP3 will be up there soon smashing some #woodies&deer.

FWIW Drinking and driving, within reason, in Nat is not a huge risk. Like others have said it's a straight shot to the interstate (hotels), the cops have much more important shite to worry about, and as long as you arent blackout and running ppl over in the road you will be fine. Have fun!

I'm planning on bringing the SO over there December 19th, which is a Saturday.

We will just make the trip there and back to Monroe. I'm wondering two things:

1) When should we get there? Morning? Afternoon? Want to spend as much time as we can there and see the fireworks and what not.
2) Where would be a good place to park since we would only be there the day and not staying overnight?

It's like a port city on a Carnival Cruise, if you like that kind of thing.

Get there as early as you like. Fun starts round 11ish (lunch). That's plenty enough time to wander around and then get to see fireworks @ 7, I think.

Parking will not be a problem. Park anywhere you'd like.
