Anyone who thinks 100+ million innocent people dying is no big deal isnt worth replying to. The people of China are no more to blame for their countries politics than any of us.

Not "real" simply an aberration.
If you do some measurement and simple math the sections I have circled would be offset by roughly 50'. The dam would have failed LONG before that level of deformation and that picture is from 2018.

We likely would not be able to visualize the deformation. Steel reinforced concrete structures are amazingly rigid. It would begin to become worrisome when the deformation is measured in centimeters. When crest or thrust block displacement starts getting to 50mm the engineers would start to sweat, this is why the poor sat images are so rediculous to point to as the condition of the dam. There are all sorts of potential failure modes. I have no idea what type of grout/water seals are in the dam and if they are keyed or not, whether they used rubble concrete and how the steel was tied in etc and etc. To have a good idea what is going on you really would need an FEA and a lot more correct information about how the dam was constructed.
The bottom line is by the time there are pictures that would make the average person say "that's gonna fail" it would likely have already failed or failure would be imminent. The West will likely not know anything until it actually fails if it does. Keep in mind it is holding back ~500 feet of reservoir depth and the water retention is enough to reduce the rotation of the earth by a demonstrable amount.

He might be taking about conservation of angular momentum. Water retention would theoretically increase the moment of inertia of the planet and therefore slow down the rotational velocity compared to if the water was released.

The thought that we can make something that would altar the angular momentum of the earth is laughable. When scaled to the same size, the earth is smoother than a cue ball.
