Damn, that's rough. My nephews went to school there until last year. Why are they bringing him to Lafayette though? I didn't know Lafayette had any more capabilities than LC.

We have most stuff for adults, but there's a big lack of pediatric specialty care in LC. Depending on the type and severity of the child's injury, may not have had the right type of surgeon in town. Hope the kid is ok.

I don't really see how other than the kid maybe started to fumble the gun and accidentally grabbed the trigger while trying to catch the gun before it fell.

It is. California has a drop test all guns must pass to be sold there.

More than likely it passed the test and the real story is someone pulled the trigger.

Wont know until they say what type of pistol it was.

If it was a High Point there's a good chance that dropping it was the ONLY way to get it to fire.

Does Lake Charles not have a decent hospital? Why would they transport him to Lafayette?

Level of trauma from the gunshot is likely the reason. I wouldn't be surprised if they helicoptered the child to Houston or New Orleans if its really bad.

Guns are created now with a mechanical mechanism to prevent discharge from impact.

Older models will still fire from impact.

Yep, this was either a really shitty gun or an old one.....or the more likely scenario was that the kid dropped it, went to grab it as it was falling, and pulled the trigger in the process

A drop discharge can happen a lot easier with a revolver. I had a friend shoot himself in the back of the knee by dropping a .357 revolver.

Lafayette General Medical Center is a Level II Trauma facility.

Lake Charles has no such facility.

dropped a loaded gun?

gun went off and hit 1st grader per twitter

Stop this shite. Firearms dont just up and "go off" unless theyve had hammer/sear work. A negligent PERSON has to pull the trigger.

Lafayette has some specialists that LC doesn't

one big area is burns. their burn center (I think at Lourdes) is amazing. anyone with serious burns will get stabilized here and transported to Laffy

wasn't life threating , so child was taken to Lafayette Charity. LC does not have trauma center at charity . WTF is wrong with parents, who allow a 1st grader to have a pistol. Can's sue the school for this one.
