Sad story. Being a cop in Chicago has to be awful, at the same time the idiots (looking at your Rahm) who make policy are to blame for not fixing some of this already.

BIL lives in McHenry, it is like a Rockwell painting, rural, agricultural and very Americana. They hate Chicago, they control everything in the State and their taxes are sky high. We will make a run into the city on the train and you can definitely see the change as you get closer. It just looks like older housing, then the city.
We were traveling to downtown once and took a wrong turn, ended up going through an area of million dollar homes, a really nice park, then bam a war zone. There were burnt out cars, mattresses, and trash in the streets, etc. We were there about 8 am so no one was up, it was very surreal. I think the neighborhood with the big houses was actually Obama's.
We went for the Wisconsin trip to Wrigley and to get there wasn't, looked like uptown N.O. with Colleges, schools, etc. The area right around the stadium is somewhat low rent. I could be wrong, we just drove to Wrigley and then went on to Wisconsin.

The area around Wrigley is low rent? Lol. WTF are you talking about? A decent 2 BR condo runs you a solid $500k (or higher). I used to live there.
And you can’t take one wrong turn and just end up in a crappy neighborhood. Chicago is way more segregated than that. Hell I lived there for 10 years and was never in a bad area. They are incredibly easy to avoid.

Chicago is just like baton rouge. If you do not live in north baton rouge then you are fine

I used to work a at Clark and Madison and go to Thompson Center to grab lunch. Blows my mind that this kind of thing would happen inside the Thompson Center, but then again the suspect ran in there.
There is some degree of crime everywhere in the city (from drugs, vandalism and theft to the violent stuff), just like other major cities.
As someone else already mentioned, Wrigleyville is not low rent. We lived in Southport and if we were going to buy we were looking at 6-700K for a three bedroom walk up to be in a good school districts (Blaine). Some of the lesser districts towards Diversey could be had for 4-500K.

We paid to park right next to the construction around Wrigley and everything right there was old and dumpy-"low rent". I doubt the guy we paid to park in his garage lived in a $500K walk-up.
Also, I said we took a wrong turn and went through a High-End neighborhood, a park, crossed a major thoroughfare then the hood. That is basically the same as BR and NO.

Yeah, landlords hire people to collect money for parking. It isn’t tenants out there.

Don’t have any clue what you’re talking about. Was this 35 years ago, maybe? I’ve been told decades ago, wrigley wasn’t great I have have family on southport and Rosco who rent. To buy out their floor in southport (2 bed 1 bath) was 400,000 k. To buy the house that was rented in Rosco is 900k and it is far from a nice house.
