Unfortunately this is false. I lived about 4 miles north of downtown (close to Wrigley) for several years. Lots of carjackings and muggings. Muggings at 3am near the bars is one thing, but people were getting held up at 830pm. In 2016, the liquor store next to my train station was robbed at gunpoint at 5:30pm.

McHenry, Kane, Lake, DuPage, Dekalb, and Will counties have more people combined than does Cook County, and they all tilt slightly Republican, though Dupage and Lake are trending slightly bluer these days. The problem is that they are all about 55/45 or 60/40 while Cook County is 90/10. Virtually every Republican going back to the Depression has won the state outside of Cook County, and that includes Trump, and Illinois was a swing state until at least Clinton.

That would make sense. Hyde Park is unbelievable nice, but it's plopped right next to some truly awful neighborhoods. It's where the University of Chicago is on the Southside.

Virtually all of the Northside except for some pockets (the area near where Cabrini used to be, parts of Uptown and Rogers Park) is some of the nicest real estate in the country. I wouldn't say the area right around Wrigley is low rent - it's just more bar/party/college feel than the rest of the Northside. Get a few blocks away from Wrigley in any direction, and you'll be back seeing mile after mile of million dollar brownstones. The suburbs north of the city (North Shore) are some of the richest towns in the U.S.

This shooting really sucks. I've probably walked past the Thompson Center more than a thousand times and been in there dozens, and there really is never anything violent near there or in the Loop in general, especially during the day. It'd be like the equivalent of killing a police officer in Grand Central Station or something like that.

From what I've been told by police friends, being close to either Lakeshore or the Red Line means you're at a bit higher risk for that stuff. Easy access into and out of the area. A good friend of mine was robbed by three guys at gunpoint who forced him into his place and stole everything from his apartment. He lived at one of the high rises near Lakeshore and Diversey - pretty fricking brazen on the part of the perpetrators. Of course, he was black out drunk, too, and it was at like 4 AM.

You think it's a coincidence that the top10 homicide Cities are all Democratic Strongholds???

I like the look and feel of urban neighborhoods as well, but I actually don't mind the way they do it here. These neighborhoods have very strict zoning, so the architecture and overall look of the property has to be in line with the neighborhood. The size of the houses usually doesn't change at all (unless you're a Pritzker and are rich enough to buy three adjacent properties right next to each other and throw up a $15 million mansion); they just get a fresh look. A lot of what they're replacing was built in the 40's and 50's, anyway, so it's not some architectural jewel.
