I don't see what all of the fuss is about with these controversial rules.

I'm an attorney, millennial, and two-spacer.

You should call him up and give him a verbal beat down. The number is listed (and I triple space...).

Y'all worry about the grammar and punctuation errors; I'll worry about Barnhill himself. Yes, I know he's no longer on the case (and that's a good thing for the Aubrey family).

I knew the guy when I lived down there; he played golf at the club where I was a teaching professional. He's a dolt; I can't believe Ware County elected him DA. He's also got his brown nose way up the cops' asses.

Probably his paralegal or legal secretary writing the letter after he dictated it.

If that is the case, the typists initials should be listed at the bottom.

It’s not all that egregious.

His secretary may have botched the transcription and he was too lazy to proofread it.

Spacing on typewriters tended to be uneven so double spacing after a period was standard. No need for it on electronic devices but it's a weird thing to melt over.

The most mindblowing thing about that letter is he says he's passing the case due to potential appearance of bias.

Then, he goes off to give his unsolicited opinions about whether the case should be charged or arrested. It defeats the entire purpose of conflicting yourself off the case. Why would you do that?

You grammar nazis are the worst.

Good grammar may not be a priority among you Nazi Klansmen, but it is a basic job requirement for a DA position.

Double spaces after period to begin a new sentence
Yeah, it was really common back in the days of mechanical typewriters. I've read some accounts that they did it because the strikers for punctuation had the farthest distance to travel and would get caught on the subsequent letter strikers - that did used to happen on mechanical typewriters and was a total bitch. Also read that that reason is BS and that double spacing was just a habit people adopted. Another case said it was from the days of non-proportional spacing, when an "i" took up the same space as an "m," so they included two spaces to make the sentence break more apparent for the reader.

My graduate program was in humanities and a lot of the folks I went to school with ended up in law school. They have a very strange writing style compared to what you'd see for journalism and the humanities, but this dude's mechanics are abysmal. My guess is that he doesn't write very often at all. Probably makes ADAs and PLs do it for him, but they're all gone home for the Rona.

What's weird is that he says it's such a big deal to find a different investigating office or state's attorney to handle the case. That seems to be a pretty common procedural process in most jurisdictions.

As to the crime, that looks more like some kind of agrevated manslaughter than murder. They were a little ridiculous to be chasing the guy with a shotgun, especially when there were two of them and the 911 call said they thought he was burglarizing a construction site, not an occupied residence. The video only shows a portion of the incident, but you can see the black guy hitting the white dude, though such would be a reasonable response to being accosted by a shotgun-toting redneck.

Whole thing does raise a question I've been wondering about: how to preserve the right to a speedy adjudication during a stay-at-home order.
