Need to be in Birmingham next week for 2 days for business. Hotel said that check in time is 4pm, check out 10am. Is this the new normal? Does it take 6 hours to get rooms ready? Thanks.

Did you call and ask for early check-in?

To get lots of rooms ready, yes.

If you call the hotel and ask nicely they will often allow you to check in early.
You may have to take whatever room is available though.

Call and ask. Or just go get drinks first.

It probably is, but it also rarely matters
I remember maybe 2-3 examples in the last 5 or so years when I couldn't check in early. And on a number of occasions I've checked in really early, like 11AM.

Not so much the check out time, places I go tend to be at noon, but the check in time at 4 is usually what they say. However, I've shown up at 2 sometimes and it is ready. It just depends.

This isn’t really a question you ask the internet, maybe call the hotel

Only time in the last 5 years for me is checking in at the Hilton for Mardi Gras. The place is packed so the rooms just aren't open yet.

They have couches in the lobby for a reason. Ask for a pillow, request a 4 PM wake up shout out, and take a nap

The wall seems to be working. Less maids in the US.

That's the official "cover their arse" policy that they put on their website and reservation confirmations.
Basically, it gives them plenty of cushion. If they say check-in is at 2pm and someone shows up and the room is not ready, the customer has the right to be pissed and demand recompense.
You will be able to check-in early almost always. It's just a matter of communicating with the hotel. When my wife and I travel, we usually head to the hotel straight from the airport. If the room is ready early, then great. If it's not, we just have the hotel hold our bags until it is.

When I use my Plat AMEX, I get automatic 4pm checkout. I think some other cards give you longer checkout times too. You might have someone who used a similar type card and isn't checking out until later than usual.

Baw do embassy suites and get 4 free liquor drinks

I do Hilton and get the Executive Lounge like a proper baller. They don't give free drinks to all the riff raff like Embassy Suites does.
New Orleans Pro Tip: The Hilton on St. Charles has liquor and snacks/meals in their Executive Lounge, but last time I stayed at the Hilton Riverside they didn't have alcohol in their Executive Lounge, just snacks.
