We have some work release guys on our jobsite. Not sure if they get full pay but I believe they pay for their stay in prison to some extent. But that is different than these guys.

How do you feel about paying inmates pennies to make the expensive house furnishings like dressers, end tables and such? That's what we as a nation are doing. Most furniture is made by prison labor. How about clothing/textiles?

Prison Economy from Prison Policy .org

Yet WE in the USA bitch and moan about being competitive with China and their use of prison labor. Minimum wage in Haiti: $0.63/hour.

Prison is for punishment (reform was long ago abandoned), not for enrichment of others off the work mandated by law.

While that is a nice idea, it wouldn’t be affordable. The only reason these inmates get to do the jobs that they do is because it’s so much cheaper.

I agree if you hold things constant. However, what if paying them say $5/hr lowered the reincarnation rate 5-10%? Then I bet you would net even or save money as a whole. Again, I don't know if that would actually happen, but it may be something to look into.

You may not but private citizens who are on grounds can. I regularly have to go to state buildings for work as well as for personal reasons at times and I always make sure to say thank you or sometimes a natural conversation occurs. It's probably healthy for them to be in a more normalized environment even if they don't actually talk to anyone else sometimes.

It cost a lot to house & care for these prisoners. They should work for free to help pay it off.

Do a google video search for "Barbara Norton Hurricane Chris". Once the embarrassment fades, then do another for "Barbara Norton 'shall' ".

Completely agree...we shouldn't be paying them 4 to 70 cents per hour.

There are labor companies that could use the work. Nothing worse than getting undercut by the government.

They aren't supposed to interact past simple pleasantries to anyone. You could get them in trouble.

I work for the state as well and they clean our building (mop, wax/buff the floors, pick up garbage, polish brass, clean bathrooms, etc). While we can engage with them we aren't supposed to talk about why they are in jail (and neither are they) nor are they (or us) to try to set up any sort of communication after they are released (if it happens naturally afterward then that's a different thing, the idea is to not get anywhere near the slippery slope that could lead to a conversation where a "favor" was asked of us... something like bringing them some smokes, drugs, passing messages to friends/family, etc). They are also not allowed to be alone on an elevator with a female (other than a female guard from the correctional facility).

For those not in the know on this practice, any infraction an inmate commits (regardless of how small) gets them immediately removed from the program and sent back to the correctional center. As an example, one guy was found smoking in (of all places) an A/C room. They immediately took him away and was never allowed back in the program again. It's that strict.

The inmates allowed in this program are in for low-level, non-violent offenses. After a while you can get a feel for the ones that are really taking to the program well and the ones that are just going through the motions (there's a sincerity there that's hard to fake).

There are plenty of shite jobs that will hire people that were previously incarcerated. It's not the governments job to make sure inmates have money when they get out. The notion that we should be treating inmates fairly is not indicative of the impact they have on society as a result of their crimes. Treating them well while incarcerated can also be a reason incarceration rates could go up as well. If you paid them $3 a day for 8 hours of work they can save $90 a month. If they are locked up for lets say a year they could have plenty of money when they get out.
