In fact, Americans pray more often, are more likely to attend weekly religious services and ascribe higher importance to faith in their lives than adults in other wealthy, Western democracies, such as Canada, Australia and most European states, according to a recent Pew Research Center study.

quote:

As it turns out, the U.S. is the only country out of 102 examined in the study that has higher-than-average levels of both prayer and wealth. In every other country surveyed with a gross domestic product of more than $30,000 per person, fewer than 40% of adults say they pray every day.

quote:

One idea popular among modern sociologists for a number of decades held that America’s unregulated and open religious “market” – where different faiths compete freely for new members without government interference – has fostered fertile ground for religious growth.

quote:

But even though the U.S. is more religious than other wealthy countries, it hasn’t been completely immune from the secularization that has swept across many parts of the Western world. Indeed, previous Pew Research Center studies have shown slight but steady declines in recent years in the overall number of Americans who say they believe in God. This lines up with the finding that American adults under the age of 40 are less likely to pray than their elders, less likely to attend church services and less likely to identify with any religion – all of which may portend future declines in levels of religious commitment.

They monitored this on the honor system?

Because I may have found a flaw.

I read something recently that even in the 1300s, when the church was by far the most important thing in someone's life, only about 10% were devout church goers. 10% were delinquent. And everyone else was in the middle

I don’t know why that’s surprising. Those other countries are praying to the wrong god.

Technically, Jews, Christians, and Muslims all believe in the same God. They just disagree to who his prophets are.

They should read this study. It’s pretty clear.

That first graph just points out that gdp and religion are independent entities and there is no direct correlation between them in the US. For all other countries it seems the more who pray, the lower the gdp is and less prayer means more gdp. In the US, I guess we've decided that we'll pray and be rich.

I’ve read a similar thing. Don’t recall exactly where I read it. Think it might’ve been in The Tudors which described religious life in England.

(whispers) americans lie in polls constantly

I have relatives who, if asked in a poll, would undoubtedly endorse their love of Jesus but also haven't set foot in a church or done anything markedly religious in probably decades

More GDP leads to less prayer. People get drunk on their own hype and abandon God.

You see the same pattern within countries - dominant social groups are less religious. You even saw it in the Old Testament. Saul disobeyed the prophets, David killed Uriah, Solomon began serving pagan gods, and Uzziah tried to usurp priestly authority in the Temple.

The reason our gdp is so high is because business compete freely with little govt interference which fosters economic growth

Isn’t freedom great?

In the United States we pray to the one true God, Protestant Jesus, and he blesses us

Religion is being replaced with the church of social justice.
