The Biden administration scaled back eligibility for its student loan forgiveness plan Thursday, the same day six Republican-led states sued President Joe Biden in an effort to block his student loan forgiveness plan from taking effect.
Borrowers whose federal student loans are guaranteed by the government but held by private lenders will now be excluded from receiving debt relief. Around 770,000 people will be affected by the change, according to an administration official.
The Department of Education initially said these loans, many of which were made under the former Federal Family Education Loan program and Federal Perkins Loan program, would be eligible for the one-time forgiveness action as long as the borrower consolidated his or her debt into the federal Direct loan program.

Seems like it.
Idk if the administration did this to get ahead of any potential court rulings, but its an asston of people who are being thrown out of the program.

Impossible. Shitlibs said the legality was airtight. The entire thing will end up getting thrown out in the courts.

If Republicans were to get housed in the midterms, they would deserve every bit of it.

If the 2008 mortgage assistance is any indication, a lot of people will be told to do X to qualify for forgiveness.
After the fact, they will find out they were NOT qualified for this, the organization talking to them knew it, and told them to do it anyway to get their numbers up for a metric they wanted high for a reason.

I dont get how one could think it could possibly be legal for the President alone to just cancel federal debts owed
It makes absolutely no sense
I guess if you just promise it enough then it just happens somehow?
What is this

I said it when this was announced. That was the whole point of this. They know it can’t be done this way. It was just to try to swing midterm votes. Then after midterms they’ll back off from loan forgiveness realizing they can’t do it this way legally. “Well we tried but the Republicans stopped us.”

They're using a 2003 law that said student loans could be modified for people who've served in the military or have been affected by war or national emergency. It was a 9/11 law that was made permanent by the end of the Bush administration. Its the same law Trump used to issue the initial loan repayment pause.

What's really going to make it good is that the application becomes live in early October. Millions will fill it out, mentally and emotionally investing themselves into it. Then, sometime in December the rug will be pulled out from under them.
