You are wrong. You have to be born into it. Regardless of sense or IQ.
What do I win?

I'm with the OP. You have to be born into this shite from what I understand
If you know the difference between North/South East/West you've met all the requirements

You're telling me 1% of people are capable of being trained to prevent a ship from running aground? And they all happen to be related?

What’s the largest boat YOU have ever driven ?

“You might get on a ship at 3am and not get off until the sun rises”

It ain't that hard. Hell if the boat wrecks they not even responsible. All a pilot does is give guidance. Captain still drives the boat, pilot doesn't touch the controls.

I would think so. An old boss let me drive his yacht once and it was nothing to it

Don’t need an above average IQ
I've had conversations with 2 River Pilots over the years and let's just say neither one of them would qualify for membership in "The Mensa Society".
Like everybody knows, it's not what, but who you know when it comes to getting that job. Nepotism in its truest sense.

Wonder how long it would take to get to Natchez Under the Hill from BR at 40 mph on the river?
Google Earth's path tool says that it's approximately 130.87 miles from the Horace P. Wilkinson III bridge to Under the Hill in Natchez, roughly following the main channel of the Mississippi River. So, at 40 mph it would take 3.2718 hours (math provided by Alexa) to make the trip. This, of course, is a lower estimate assuming the river does not flow. Assuming the river flows at 5 mph, the total time increases to 3.7391 hours. I think.
Yes, it is a slow Saturday morning. Why do you ask?

The job is challenging. It’s fairly risky. Climbing from a pilot boat to a blue water vessel can be risky.
Imo, the job is necessary.
Are they overpaid? Hell yes. They could get equal or even better skilled pilots at a quarter of the pay.

I wouldn’t want to work a 28 day on schedule. I would hate being away from my family like that

I dont have an opinion one way or another, but of course Id frick things up with no training.
However, lets not act like these guys are the cream of the crop when it comes to intellect. Its a job.

It’s a lot more difficult than you think. I worked on a boat on the river for a few years when I was younger. The river current, amount of traffic, weight of the ship, etc., makes things a lot more difficult than driving your 18ft Ranger. Also, at night, you’re using instruments to navigate. Not physically demanding at all...which I think is why most people here hate on these guys.

Not sure how easy it may be these days, but this is my great-grandfather piloting a paddlewheeler on the Mississippi around 1886. There weren't any gps systems and the charts were generally out of date since every time the river would rise a new hazard would present itself. Pilots back then had to be particularly familiar with the river they were navigating.
His license covered the Mississippi River and its major tributaries from Lee County, Iowa to New Orleans. (He had his license suspended for three years for running past Pittsburgh on the Ohio River and onto the Allegheny River which was not included as a tributary of the Mississippi.)

It's so hard that it's hereditary apparently.
