But but but river pilots have to pay taxes and put miles on their own vehicles driving to work! These are things non-pilots don't understand!

I don’t understand the infatuation with certain topics on this board.

River pilots. Operators. Gravy. Tourney ball. Hurricanes

Those seem to be the 5 that this board can just not let go.

I used to run my Glastron ski boat on the Mississippi. Sandbar hopping to explore and fish for catfish.

I should have been a riverboat pilot.

Wonder how long it would take to get to Natchez Under the Hill from BR at 40 mph on the river?

That could be fun.

guaranteed you would be a better "pilot" than most of them, but you didn't have the right last name to get to the next level.

that entire world is pure make-believe and only exist in order to justify their absurd salaries.

I'm not sure about the Mississippi River pilots as I've only dealt with Virginia Bar pilots driving the carrier in and out of sea so much, but you have to be able to draw the Mississippi River water map from memory, to include water depths, currents, set, drift, low points, water theory, etc. It's not as easy a feat as you think it is. Talked to a guy that drove the Bataan (I think) into New Orleans waterfront and he was saying that was one of the more difficult times he had driving a ship. Mississippi does some wicked stuff, and the salt water doesn't help at all.

But reading about the nepotism going on, that way of operating and recruiting will bring down the association at some point, it's bound to happen. Your quality slowly starts diminishing.

Because it's all about campaign contributions. It's corruption at it's finest. AT&T does the same shite. Provide garbage, send out bills, throw a crab boil for all the legislators the night before the session starts.

The OT hates anyone that makes money. They make a big deal about the oil and gas industry also due to the money they make.

I know several people that make $200-$400k in the oilfield industry. One can make even more working abroad. Pilot jobs are not the only high paying jobs in the south.

Wrong. It’s the highest average paying job in the state easily and the only way you can get in is by being born into it. It’s 100% bullshite and it’s a racket, and it’s costing all of us money bc they’re greedy and they’re supported by all the top politicians

And you’re little story about knowing people making 200-400k in the oil industry doesn’t even move the needle. The river pilots are about to get increased to $900k a year

It is as hard as they claim. Pretty much guaranteed 99% of the people who think it’s easy would put the ship aground after a flood.
