Blondie is the band...that included F5F and Grandmaster Flash for one of the first videos on MTV...

It just so happens that Debbie lays down the lyrics that ended up being the 1st Rap hit...ever

ETA, of course I know you're messing around, I'm trying to edumucate the onlookers

What a stupid thing to get offended about. Even dumber that he apologized for it.

If some black people that I worked for put out a video of them singing like white folk, and a memo that said come on up and talk whenever you want, I would have no problem with this. Bunch of babies.

Eminem has a lot of apologizing to do. Vanilla Ice too, just not nearly as much.

I don’t think there is any unconscious bias going on here either way. Unconscious bias isn’t “I think all black people like rap” and it’s not “I think my CEO believes that all black people like rap”

I believe that John Hancock’s management genuinely wanted to connect with their minority employees. They just missed the mark. If the objective is to make everyone feel included, you probably shouldn’t roll out stereotypical satire. I’ve worked at several financial services companies. People who work in financial services tend to lean socially conservative, regardless of race, so the idea that they would connect with their black employees by pretending to be 80s era gangsta rappers just demonstrates that they probably don’t understand their black employees very well.

So you have a conversation about it, which seems to be what happened according to the article. Management made a misguided attempt to connect, it rubbed some people the wrong way and they held a forum to discuss it. The employees need to meet them halfway and give some constructive feedback, but this is how things should be done.
