In the video, Manulife’s largely white leadership team, including chief executive Roy Gori, danced, sang, and mugged like rappers, a “lighthearted” attempt to “reinforce the approachability” of senior management, the Toronto company said in a statement Monday.

“We regret creating this video, removed it immediately, and held a forum to apologize to and hear directly from our employees,” the Manulife statement said.

What was he apologizing for? Singing?

quote:

Props to the Hancock employees who raised a stink about the video and then let Harrison and Gori know that bias, even if it’s unconsicous bias, is still a problem.

Is everything offensive now? I would love for someone to explain to me what is racist about this.

Also known as "beat white people over the head with white guilt until they cave"

Which is why the proper response to any of this is a polite, but firm, "frick. Off."

Nah, the stupidest thing you'll hear today is if one of our resident SJWs drops in to defend it.

Motherfrickas wanna tell me I can’t rap?,
Get the hell outta here, and cut the crap,
With my sick dope rhymes you’ll be impressed,
Then I’ll pay you money to get undressed,
Cause I’m a CEO, you know that I’m legit,
And you’re a stripper, so let me do some coke off your tits.

yo yo, let’s get jiggy,
Fly boys up in heyah,
Word to your mother.

Supposedly both of the black people in Canada were offended.

No, it was just one. Roger Mooking was down in the US filming another episode of Man, Fire, Food.

“We regret creating this video, removed it immediately, and held a forum to apologize to and hear directly from our employees,” the Manulife statement said.

Hours after Manulife’s 36,000 employees received a link to the video, Gori responded to mounting criticism over the company’s internal chat network.

He wrote that some employees were amused by the effort to “poke fun at ourselves.?. . .?At the same time, colleagues have shared that they found the video upsetting. On behalf of the leadership team, please know it was not our intention to offend anyone. We deeply regret this and apologize to those who were offended.”

This is what needs to stop happening. frick that. I am going to assume they were having fun with it and had no intentions to offend anyone.

If someone is going to do a heavy metal type song they are likely to dress up with a wig with long hair, tight leather pants, etc.. If they were doing a country song, they would likely put on boots and a cowboy hat. If you get offended because the CEO decided to have fun and do a rap video and dress like a rapper then you are the problem.. Not them.

So instead of apologizing they should release a statement being completely honest "The rap video we put together has offended people. We created the video as something to have fun with. To show a different side of us and to show our appreciation to all of our employees. In no way whatsoever was it created to be offensive. If you still feel offended by it schedule an appoint me with me so we can discuss it"

It's time for people to get over themselves.

I’ll take a stab at this.

It appears that this video was a response to concerns of a lack of diversity at the company, so it’s possible that the “message” received by some is “we can reach all these black folk by pretending to be gangsta rappers....because blacks like gangsta rappers”.

Before anyone here loses their shite, I don’t think what they did is offensive and certainly not racist. I’m trying to explain why some people would find it off-putting.

And I think that speaks more to their "unconscious bias" than the perceived "unconscious bias" of the C-levels.
